As the monsoon( term used for rainy season in India) showers announce their arrival, the dusty umbrellas come out of their hideouts in Indian homes. You can find colourful mushrooms moving on streets in the rain showers, if you are an imaginative soul:p From the top view of a 50-floored building, they might look like slow moving black carrom pucks, just a mere guess. Its a lot fun walking in the rain, holding an umbrella, unless it has no holes:p The fun lasts till you see an obese friend walking with a polythene cover on his head. All you would need to do is welcome him/her under your umbrella with a constipated smile and vacate 5/6th of the Beneath-Umbrella space to cover-up the 300 pounder:p So, how was your last Umbrella sharing experience? when was the last time you shared an umbrella with someone? Mine was a completely new and strange experience. Its an unbelievable, unexpected( for me) and an interesting story with shades of a romantic thriller. On a mid-october rainy evening in 2005, i was sleeping in the bus while returning home from the college. The bus Stop/station where i should have got down had already been surpassed and when i opened my eyes, the bus had moved one stop further. I hastily stepped down soon before it could move one more station ahead. I had to walk back another 1 mile or so to catch another bus to reach home. It was slightly drizzling then. I started walking briskly with a loaded bag on my back and a book in the hand. Half way through, i caught up with rain. I did'nt know what to do, i did'nt even have an umbrella, i anxiously looked around for some roof/shelter. All my eyes could find is but one tea stall at a distance of 50m, i rushed there. Now this real story takes an interesting turn. The rainfall did'nt seem to get lighter at any juncture, i was a bit tense because it was getting darker. Its risky to walk alone in the twilight hours in that dense non-residential place where i was standing. I took a coin from my pocket, inserted it in the coin phone at the tea stall, called up my dad to ask whether he could pick me up. Luckily, he was there at home and obliged me. I felt relieved. My body and clothes were wet. As I was adjusting my hairs and clothing, i saw a tender beauty walking towards me( i mean, the tea stall). Her face was'nt clear in that failing daylight, so i can't rate or describe it. But it was good enough to sense her angelic beauty. The perfume she wore was tantalising. She stood besides me with an umbrella in her hand. Without acting too smart or silly, i stood quiet and undisturbed behaving like a gentleman, infact, i am:p I did'nt understand why she stood there alone in that tea stall when she had an umbrella!:p I sneaked a look into her face, it was'nt a very cheerful one. It had gotten more darker by that time, almost a night. After few minutes, she asked me one question, " Do you belong to this area? " " No, i'm waiting for my Dad ", i replied. I still don't know why she asked that. Then she asked " Could you please come along with me, my hostel is near-by, i'm very afraid to walk alone in this place. please, i'm very nervous " " How far is your hostel? " - me " very near, very very near " - she ( Because of the way she said it, i chuckled and said in my mind, very polite, very very polite:p) We started walking together. while walking, i was thinking of so many things. Several questions started popping up in my mind; 1. why did she choose particularly me to guide her home safely? 2. Is she from Al-Qaeda or something or Is she a gangster/smuggler? ( I did'nt have much money, anyway, but had two functional kidneys, one beautiful heart, an efficient brain, etc) 3. What if my dad catches me walking with a girl, what explaination can i give? I felt like an idiot, after thinking about all that. After a furlong of silent walking, i looked at her. She was holding her umbrella just above her head and it was no way near my head level. I just asked myself "Am i her body guard?". May be for the time being, but i have a right asking her to lift her arm a bit and protect me from the rain hitting. I broke the silence to say softly " I don't mind holding an umbrella for you " She was quick-witted, hence got my point early and handed over the umbrella to me. Within a second, i metamorphosed from a BODYGUARD to a MAKE-UP MAN, who holds the umbrella for others( actresses):p I guided her through to the hostel safely, she thanked me a lot for that and went off, leaving me alone:( ofcourse, she was supposed to do that, she can't call me inside and offer a cup of coffee, its a LADIES HOSTEL. I was left alone in the dark, there were no street lights either, due to power cut. It was only then i realised that i had to walk back alone DRENCHING, without an UMBRELLA!! My dad was waiting there, wearing an angry frown....LOL -------------------THE END---------------- One last question, have you ever shared an umbrella with a stranger? would you, if approached by a stranger? Thanks for taking time and do share your thoughts:)

Bravo! that is a wonderful story. Well, no, I have never shared an umbrella with a stranger, but I did give an extra on away to a stranger once, just to avoid having to share. It was an umbrella I didn't like anyway and was glad to get rid of, and the stranger was most grateful. In my experience, though, it is quite difficult to share an umbrella even with a friend, because one person may be taller and gets poked in the eye, or your friend tips the umbrella down and you can't see where you are going. Once the wind blew the umbrella inside out and all the water collected in it and fell down my neck. No, thank you, I'd rather just get wet from the rain.

LOL...that means you walked some distance with your umbrella inside out....that would be a real fun to watch. Height is'nt really a problem, you can handover the umbrella to the taller person.

I have not unless I got a golf umbrella. It has to be big enough besides when it rains here in Manitoba, the rain comes in all directions, the wind picks up, and if you do not hold the umbrella just so, it turns inside out. I used to live in British Columbia, and the same thing happened, not the rain aiming from all directions, but the wind would blow almost gale force, everything not nailed down would fly and the umbrella would break. That means, anyone else under the umbrella with me would not feel as comfortable and still get soaking wet.

yes, in such conditions, its better not to share an umbrella. It would be an insult and embarassing if umbrella breaks and some stranger is under it along with you. He would get wet. About that inside out thingy, i've experienced it too sometimes, it looks ridiculous to others when it turns inside out. LOL!

I generally don't use an umbrella. Only when it's raining very bad I use one. I can't remember when was the last time I shared an umbrella with someone... I think it was my sister but I can't remember how long ago it was.

That's was an interesting story indeed! Well, I don't remember sharing an umbrella with stranger because I don't always carry one with me. Rains in Thailand don't usually last for an hour. Anyway, this year there's too much rain in this country than in the previous years. So I thought I should buy an umbrella. Good thing because when my boyfriend came to see me it was almost raining almost every afternoon. So there, the last time I shared an umbrella was with my boyfriend.

Not only that, when there's no rain, they modify the weather here and do cloud seeding. So oftentimes during the year there's one minute it's sunny and the next minute it's pouring down. That's why I think the rains only last an hour or so.

Your story sounds like something out of a romance novel, if i were you i would try to see this girl again, you know where she lives now, and you were quite taken by her..It might be that this is your future love, who knows...Here in Texas we call it the monsoons to,at least at my house we do....I always say man look at those clouds looks like we will get the monsoons...I really don't know where we got that word,im sure it came down from my parents...The last time i shared and umbrella it was with my hubby...I have never shared an umbrella with a stranger, but i would if i were single and i had your experience,I woulds try to get a date with that girl....Like i said it sounds like something out of a romanic novel, very enjoyable....I kelp waiting for the next sentence...

That was a treat only till she asked me to join her walk. Anyhow, i liked your thought, it would be wonderful if she also feels the same, the next rainstorm, we would meet each other again. Who knows, i may get mad and go there to test your words, in the next rainstorm, i believe in FATE. I'll not forget to take the umbrella, next time:p

LOL.....Dating!!...that's an old tale now, almost 2 years back it happened. To be honest, i did'nt really have any crush on her, it was more of a frightening sort of situation. Moreover, i saw her in the twilight hours, its difficult to visualise her clearly when i think of it. I just recollected everything today and put it in a romantic fashion. If you enjoyed, that's my pleasure. I did'nt know you people in US are familiar with 'monsoon', from what i read its a term used in Indian subcontinent. Its originated and mostly used in south asia.

Last 2 times I've "shared" an umbrella, I was totally not under it, but I was keeping my 80 yr old mom dry! The very last time was on the 4th of July, before that was last Christmas time. You did know we've had an unuserally wet year in Texas, right? Both times I, and the other umbrella holder, got soaked, and even mom got damp, its hard to get someone in & out of a car - when your lifting them - with out everything getting at least damp!

Actually, at Christmas time, there were 3 of us, my neice, my sister & I. On the 4th of July, it was my roomie. Mom's pretty feeble these days & if she'd been holding an umbrella, it'd probably have been close to her & kept her drier!

tha last time, i think i share an umbrella with my boyfriend. it is a long time ago, although it is always rainy in this month. we don't like to take umbrella, so we often walk in the rain when it is not heavy. frankly, i enjoy the feeling of walking with my lover in the rain. it seems very romantic. have you walked in the rain with your lover? do you enjoy it or hate it?

To be honest, I couldn't even tell you a time that I've ever shared an umbrella with someone. Fortunately we don't have monsoon seasons or anything. I have an umbrella standard in my car. and most of the time, unless it's pouring, I don't mind getting wet. Also...if It's pouring I usually avoid going outside...and if I have to (run from building to car or something) I'd bolt!

I think you are very lucky compared to me. I've always found someone to share my umbrella with, even when i'm in no mood to do it, many a times with those people i'm just acquainted with and not close. Its an uncomfortable feeling sharing an umbrella with folks you treat just as an acquaintance.

It was a very long time ago . My hubby loved to hear the rain and we couldnt hear it in the house so we went for a long walk in the rain under the umbrells just to listen to the rain upon it. Was a very nice walk. and we never did it again . what a shame that we didnt take the time to do that walk again after we moved out here it hardly ever rains and when it does I go dance around in it and so does grand daughter she will grab my hand and say common gandmaw let get int the rain. When reading your story I was afriad you were being lead some where to get mugged. Dont know if I would have done it now adays might have years ago tho. Hope dad didnt stay mad to long after you told him what happened.

I am sorry, I don't read that long discussions, but I got the point from the 1st stanza itself... Its been long since I have shared an umbrella with someone, infact its been long since I have used an umbrella itself.. I usually don't carry an umbrella with myself, I like getting drenched in the rain whenevr it pours.. Its absolute fun.. The last time I used an umbrella and shared it with a friend of mine was about 4-5 years back when I was in school.. I used to carry umbrella then, and that day, it was raining really hard.. We were to get home, and there was no one besides us two on the road.. So, we decided to share my umbrella and get home...

Hey, that was an interesting story, still more interesting than-'pyar hua ikraar hua'from shri 420.I enjoyed it a lot, but tell me did it really happened or its ur imagination power. If its an imagination, i would say that you can become a good writer. Regarding my experience of sharing umbrella, there is none. I rearely go out in rains and if i have to go i plan to go in a car.

No, I've never shared an umbrella with a stranger. You must be non-threatening looking and seem like a gentleman. Maybe she has ESP and new you would be kind or maybe you seem like a kind soul in some way. That was cool. So did you explain to your Dad and was he OK afterward? I think what you did was very nice.
