When do your compulsions show up?

Whenever I am under a great deal of stress over money, I have two compulsions. First there is the cleaning compulsion. Once I am done with that, the fingernail biting compulsion takes over. And, it's almost impossible to resist. Fingernail biting has been my steady ally since I was four years old. And, I hate it. For almost thirty years, I have lived with pain in my fingertips, because of this compulsion. Some people call it a habit, but it's not really. It's just a reaction to unresolved stress and emotion. Recently, I found a way to beat it by channeling my emotions into writing, but then it came back again because of financial worries. But, once the worries were past, the compulsions left as well. Do you find that your compulsions come back only when you are under severe stress? Or, do they stay with you, even after the stress is gone?

Compulsion comes to when i'm upset or in tension, I expect a lot and it creates a heavy disappointmnt when it doesnot happens. I stand by my husband's side and walk with him in every situation , still he never minds me as a human. Even if i say i'm ready to sacrifice my life, the next question from his side will be i never asked u to do so. then wat? So when the priority fails, i force or complu him to understand me. I make strong rules and compul him not to cross his limits. As he is has mind changeing guy,he alwasy go with " if it is better than this, then its ok me?" option,

I don't remember any compulsion over stress of any kind. usually what happens is that I will avoid people, lose sleep and stomachache for no reason. since it's hard to avoid people now that I have a shop, I take a warm bath to help me sleep and drink orange juice or eat anything sweet to reduce tension. I haven't found anything to get rid of stomachache though :(

My compulsion to overeat can only be arrested a day at a time. This compulsive overeating habit I have manifests itself whether I'm happy, mad, glad, or sad. Maybe you could use the methods that 12 step programs use and give yourself a daily reprieve by turning things over to your Higher Power (I call God) but in 12 step meetings we each come to our own understanding of who we each believe our Higher Power to be. In the AA Big Book, (you can read it on the internet or in the library) I think if you read it, my suggestion would be to read the chapter 'How it Works' it is extremely helpful when you think about your past and discover your own background and why you have these behaviors and what are the feelings you have, and how you got them. Personally I think this way to get a self-knowledge of the positive and negative characteristics in all of us, it is useful in living a sane life in recovery without using our addictions to cope. Writing is used as a tool in order to accomplish this, so that would work in your favor. In any case I truly hope you work it out and I wish you good luck. Take care.

I would say my biggest compulsion would be organizing and stocking up on things. We've lived in this house since the end of July. I've rearranged and re-organized my pantry at least 2 dozen times since then. I've counted and recounted things that the numbers don't really matter on. I make sure I have enough of most food items that we eat on a regular basis to last us a month. I've always been really bad about stocking up on baby items, too. My son had over 50 bottles, and I nursed him 75% of the time! I recently donated over 50 jars of baby food (left over from my son, even after I used some to make him fruit roll ups!) to a place that helps families who have recently had house fires and the like. We probably have over 500 disposable diapers at our house right now, because every time he grows out of a size, we still have several packs left of that size. It's crazy and a bit irrational I know. But it something I always do. I don't think it is at all stress related.

Well, the nail biting is the thing almost always with me, not like comes back only o sterss time but all the time i do bite fingernails, but something i can tell you here, I bite more in a more concentrated fashion when i am under stress, I just pt all my concentration on the fingernail biting while i am worried and it becomes normal when i become normal, overcome the stress but still bite....funny

Locked doors. I know I've locked them, but I just want to keep checking them. I know "Get help Pro!" but still its just something I do. I really fear I'll forget one time and then I'll be sorry or someone else depending on me, which is way worse.
