For common mathematical calculation better us brain as to enrich our brain's knowledge to test its efficiency. But not for the scientific calculation. Because it is a prove tools.

I would only use a calculator if the calculation is too intensive for my brain to work out.

I think we should avoid use of calculator, our brain should be used so that it remains active and alert.I normally do not use calculator, till am required to do some lengthy calculations. I am not used to is, I can do the calculation mentally most of the time. Last year I was on a training, related some 'accounts' work, where we were required to use calculator, I used to feel uncomfortable using it.

Unfortunately, I think that I am like most people who pull out the calculator instead of using the ol' noggin! Practically, everyone carries a calculator these days because it is a standard feature in most cell phones.
When I do try to add in my head while grocery shopping, I tend to round of to the nearest dime. That makes it that much easier.
When I do multiplication without paper, I write in the air or on my shirt with my finger. I don't know why, but it seems to help!

No problem and there is nothing wrong for doing that such practice. It will depend on jobs or tasks attended and the level of comfortable. Let say but not for if and only if, you go to any eatery outlet and on paying your bill, do you believe or have confident if that cashier doesn't use a calculator machine to sum up the items in your bill?. Or you just satisfied on looking that cashier pane his/her face left-right, right-left on doing calculation...?
Just like nowadays people use GPS device rather than a printed location map. Doesn't mean that the GPS's owner no nothing about the basic principles in map orientation for where is North, South, West and East. Anyway, thanks for providing good point for our discussion, appreciated and I'm honored.

I think people prefer using a calculator to do a simple math than their brain because it is faster. Humans love instant gratifications and the calculators kind of giving them that satisfaction.
