I was in a chat room chatting in Spanish to a lady when this woman interrupted us and said ENGLISH ONLY - The chat room I was in does not specify that it is English exclusively. The other lady and I apologized and reasurred the woman that we meant no offense, however, she was highly insulted. I do not understand why the woman was so offended as we were not talking about her. We didn't even know she existed. Why do people get so insulted over someone speaking a language they don't understand?

Some people just want to start stuff. Others actually get paranoid if someone is speaking a different language. "What'd he say about me!?" That's part of what some are thinking when people are typing or even speaking in a different language. In the online case I usually excuse myself if its a different language chat or forum, but other times I know people are testing out their stuff so its cool.

That's some of the reasons why I have stopped chatting online, because people will definitely ruin your mood. I think they are just there to create or start something unnecssary, to step on other people and look up for fights online.
Sometimes I message the other person that I ma talking too, and chat privately through private messaging. Stay aaway from these types of people, they are those what we call as "internet trolls!"LoL

People don't like to be excluded. When that happens to me in a chat room, I feel uncomfortable too. I think that the other people are talking about me. I feel the same about that as I would about people whispering in a room in front of me. It's just a little rude not to include everyone.

Well I think it was very rude of this women to interrupt you like that! If the forum has no language rules, then you and the other lady were well within your rights to speak in Spanish, and it was just apallingly rude of this other person to interrupt and start throwng her weight about. I guess perhaps she was paranoid and thought you were talking about her. I find a lot ofEnglish=speaking people have this paranoia about other languages - if they can't speak them, they tend to put up barriers and be very intolerant and defensive, instead of accepting that English us not the only language in the world, and perhaps they could go out and learn another one and then they could join in!!

Pretty rude of the lady to tell you that English must be spoken in a chatroom that doesn't specify on any language rules. If I were you or your friend chatting, I would've completed disregarded her or told her where she could go. In Spanish, as well. LOL.
Seriously speaking though, there are some forums I'm a part of (myLot included) that doesn't allow other languages besides English, and their reasoning is for moderation purposes. One can't really moderate a site if there are a ton of people speaking in different languages, it's easier to manage that way. But all these sites always have it written in the rules. That person was wayyy out of line and you had nothing to apologize for.

Maybe she just want to take part in you,but she did not understand you.She did not known Spanish. If you were chatting in English ,then will more people join you.But we are chatting in the chat room just like using our private language. We have the free. But in my humble opinion,if that lady wanted to join you she could told you politely.

I don't really understand this. I can see how it would be rude if you were at a party and talking right in front of someone in a language they didn't understand, but in an internet chat room? Where does it say that everything on the internet can only be in English? I've seen some chat discussions occur in French, even on kids' chat sites (club penguin), and I don't think that's a big deal either.
If someone was chatting in a language I didn't understand, I might ask them to chat in English if I found the topic interesting, but I don't think I'd shout.

That's usually a problem when you are in a community chat room. Some people want to join any discussion on the community room but he or she doesn't understand the foreign language used. Although its not right if she demanded that you only talk in ENGLISH ONLY.
The best way to avoid this kind of conflicts (if ever there are some people who are like this )is to talk on a private room with someone you want to talk in a language aside from english. (I always get message from other people when we talk Filipino on the chatroom).

Maybe she thought you were talking about her. Or maybe she just wanted to be nosy and know what you were talking about. Hehe!! If it doesn't specify that it was english only then you shouldn't have had to stop chatting in spanish. You should have asked her where it said that you couldn't speak in another language. And she shouldn't have gotten offended because you weren't even talking to her to begin with.

It is a natural thing especially when two people chat in English, then another woman cuts in, like supposing you were talking about recipes and she wants to say that is her favorite dish and then you switch to Spanish and she thinks you are saying, "oh such stupid woman, if she had any sense she would know it is a peasant dish and not for snobs like her." but I guess this was not the case. If the Chat room did not specify, you can speak in Spanish or what language you prefer. And since you and her were not in the same physical space as her, she need not have told you what language you should speak.

I think alot of ppl get worked up over it b/c there are illegals who come to the US and don't bother to learn English expecting everyone around them to either learn Spanish or find someone to translate for them. Personally, I don't speak any language other than English although I do know a few words of Spanish. I do find it rude when someone is in a conversation with a group of ppl and they start speaking another language...it's like their excluding ppl. That's just me and just my outlook.

I would guess the same thing applies on the web as in an everyday situation, naty, that is that most people think that it is rude when others speak in a different language than they can understand. Maybe they are just suspicious that something might be said about them. I have found myself in a similar situation, but these people were already speaking in a foreign language when I signed into the game room. I just paid them no attention.
