I've lived through most of the 1980's, 1990's and the current decade. My favorite decade hands-down has been the 1980's. This discussion was inspired by a few discussions I've seen talking claiming that things from the 1980's were, in fact, a part of the 1990's! The 1980's were a decade of: Arcade games. Nintendo. Punky Brewster. My little pony. Care bears. Rainbow Brite. He-man and She Ra. The Transformers. This is your brain PSA's. The Domino's Noid. The Cabbage patch and Garbage Pail kids. The Rubiks cube. The Smurfs. G.I Joe. Mainstream Rap. Olivia Newton-John. Men at Work. The Safety Dance. Tight Jeans. Mullets. Madonna. Miami Vice. Michael Jackson. MTV. Synth Pop. New Wave. Hair Bands. ET. Tron. Ghostbusters. Back to the Future. Ferris Bueller. Bill and Ted. Dirty Dancing. Super Mario Bros. Ronald Reagan. and so so many more things. I loved the 1980's. I loved everything about it. Things in the 1990's just weren't as...cool. and the things of today? UGH. If I could ONLY go back to the 1980s. What about you? Of all the decades that you've lived through...which has been your favorite (in terms of Pop Culture so to speak) so far? and please don't confuse the greatness of the 1980's with the 1990's!

Well, when I was in the 90s, I was still doing 80s stuff. The books I read were from the 80s, the shows were usually from the 80s (some still are). However, I'm not going to lie; the 90s probably had to be my favourite! First off; I'm going to shout out what everyone is thinking - FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR! I mean, as bad as the 90s were, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air made it really amazing (so did Calvin and Hobbes - funny though, both Fresh Prince and Calvin and Hobbes were started in the 80s, right?). The only thing - my favourite novels by Gordon Korman were from the 80s and 90s. I'm going to have to say Losing Joe's Place is still my favourite - I developed a huge vocabulary off that one (the word hubcab comes to mind).

Fresh Prince was totally the 90's as it ran from 1990 - 1996. Calvin and Hobbes however did start in the 80's. I actually remember it more from the 80's than the 90's. The other great thing about the 90's was In Living Color. that was 90-94. I'm not sure I know of Gordon Korman's stuff. but, I admit, there was some great stuff in the 90's...Green Day comes to mind. But My heart belongs to the 80's for sure. there were more people to admire...I mean what girl didn't want to be like Jem or She Ra. What boy didn't want to be a G.I. Joe or He-Man? ha ha. But yeah. that's cool that your heart belongs to the 90's :)

I love 1980's too. Lots of good TV shows, and they're different too between each other, even if they're in the same niche. For example A-Team, MacGyver, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, all of these shows are good guys vs bad guys stuff, but you can't say they're the same right? Unlike nowadays, tv is ruled by reality shows on daily basis, boring!

hA HA. Oh Knight Rider. there will never be any other Night Rider. Very true. The tv shows of the 1980's were really quite classic. I mean... you can't get any better than that.

Well I was born in the 80s, so that was a pretty good decade, but personally the "2000s" has been my favorite so far :) I graduated HS in 1999, finished college in 2003, met my husband in 2001, married him in 2007, finally got to vegas last week :) As far as the culture, yeah 1980s was better, although there wasn't nearly as much reality TV in the 80s! And I also didn't have the internet until 1997...but I also didn't NEED those things back then. I liked all the things you listed for the most part :)

Well I'm glad the 00's have been good to you. Personal life wise maybe the 2010 decade will be good to me. who knows. I graduated in '00. I'm JUST starting to go to college and I'm single. So...whatevs! Oh man, I'm not really that into reality enough to not appreciate the time period when it didn't exist. in that same thought life was a different place without the internet so I liked that life too. I loved the 80's culture. I'd like it to come back fo' sho!

Ha ha. I think we're hopelessly devoted to the 80s all the way. Hands down, the 80s was my favorite decade of my young life. The 90s were lame and a cheap imitation of what the 80s were. I've noticed that people tend to mix those two decades up too, and there's no comparison. The new millenium has been equally crappy. It promised so much and had so much hype around it, but what had the new millenium brought us? Politics and the economy have been lame, music has been lame, celebrities in general have been lame, tv has been lame, and the list goes on. Gah! I would like to meet someone that can honestly say they didn't like one thing form the 80s. The 80s have some of my favorite movies and music. And Cartoons! You can't forget the cartoons. There isn't a single thing on your list that I didn't like and I still like to this day. It makes me long for a pair of acid-washed jeans and a New Kids on the Block fanny pack. Ha ha.

So far no one has liked the 1960's or the 00's. ha ha. I've gotten 50's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Part of why I did this was because I wondered if everyones favorite decade would be the decade they were young in. Like if you were born in the 50's would it be the 50's. if you were born in the 80's would it be the 80's? You know? I don't know if it's turned out that way though ha ha. Oh man when I was little and I think about the year 2000, I totally thought we'd be living in the Jetsons world! seriously. Flying cars and stuff. WE ain't got none of that crap. Ha ha. I left so many things out of my list too, it was just the first things that came to mind. The 80's ruled. We should start an 80's fan club and live in the 1980's forever!!!

I also loved the 80's, in spite of (or maybe due to) so much of it seems like kitsch now. By comparison the 90's was so much more gloomy and serious. Nirvana and grunge for instance. Also, ET vs Schindler's List. Pop is meant to be entertaining and a bit silly, and the 80's certainly was just that. Btw. I loved the send up of 80's MTV generation music in "Music and Lyrics". The "Pop goes my heart" video was right on.

The 80s. I had it all. A lot of cool things going on, specially in anime =3 I also had my childhood sweetheart with me all the way until the early 90s. Speaking of the 90s, they absolutely sucked for me.

Was anime around in the 80's? ha ha. I've never been into anime so I always thought that was a later phenomenon. The 90's weren't terrible I don't think... I think the 00's have been terrible for m e. But yeah the 80's were totally awesome.

For the record, anime has been around since at least the 60s ;p I'll only finally catch up to the retro stuff to an extent in another 10 years! And thats cool if you didn't think the 90s were too bad. They just weren't all that fun for me is all.

I am with you on this one. I really loved the 80's and still look back with nostalgia. At 38, I can still entertain my kids to breakdance. Oh yes, I still recall Shaba-doo and Boogalo Shrimp, and the great turn-table wizard (then) Ice-T! A lot happened in the 1980's. Reagan was the cool guy in the Americas, Thatcher in Europe and Saddam Hussein, strong maties with the US, in the Middle East. And then there was Dynasty. How everyone wanted to be Alexis Alexander Carrington Colby, and the limo was the in-thing. Of course it was cool to imitate JR Ewing! But most of all, I lvoed the video games.

Oh yes, I can still breakdance at 38. However, I can't do the most acrobatic stunts, like "helicopter", backflop. I still can do the backspin and not the head spin. My kids get entertained, you know.

ha ha. Wait...do you breakdance yourself!? WHO SHOT JR!? Oh no! They never did find that out now did they :) I still own my original Nintendo NES. It's the only game system I still own. We had an atari long ago but it got broken which is so so sad. Who cares that the graphics weren't like they are today..the pop culture was great!

Apart from a few health niggles of my own and my parents I would have to say this is my favourite decade so far for living. I met my present husband in this decade and found that it was possible to be loved by someone so wonderful and love them back (after wasting 15 years with my ex). I have a wonderful job and earn good money, enough so that we have a good social life, are able to pay our mortgage and bills without any stress and can save money each month too for a rainy day. I feel much more confident in myself than I did in my teens or 20s or 30s, approaching my 40s fast mind you which I don't know how it's going to be but I just about ready to grasp the challenge LOL! If you want to know what was the best decade for pop culture for me, I'd have to say the 80s, I was a teenager in the 80s, loved music and going to clubs and dancing the night away, some people might laugh at what they think is the tacky fashion sense of the 80s but back then IT was THE in thing and we loved it hehe! I loved Wham, Miami Vice, the new romantics, many of the films you name too :) Thanks for starting such a fun discussion! x

Ha ha. I was about to say that you're the first to say this decade...but then I realized you still agree that as far as Pop culture was concerned, the 80's were the best! ha ha. I'd say even in personal life, the 80's were still, by far, my favorite but you have a great reason for loving the current decade! The 80's were the greatest. You're welcome and thank you!

I also grew up in the '70's, 80's, 90's and now the '00's. My favorite so far has been the '80's also so if I had to pick a time to re-live it would be those. If I could pick any time period to live in it would have been the 50's. I just think everything was simpler and more wholesome back then. AT PEACE WITHIN ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Well I think in terms of Pop Culture things in the 50's were wholesome and simple, but in terms of life I don't think it was. Wars and stuff. The 80's was just so fun and silly. I think it was definitely the best generation so far that i've experienced for sure!

You know...even the 80's was the start of the whole "actor becoming U.S President" phenomenon. Cause Ronald Reagan was the first! Now we've got actors all into politics these days. the 80's were the best fo'sho.

Oh i definitely agree with the 80s. I was a little kid during the 70s but spent all of jr high and high school in the 80s and it was great. I loved the music, and the funky clothes, and the silly makeup trends with purple mascara and green eyeshadow and most of all 80s big hair. Oh. My GAWD I loved the hair. I have very straight hair that looks OK now finally but if big huge 80s hair came back I'd be like a pig in mud. And I also loved the 80s because I was a teenager with few responsibilities except for school and it was just so much fun.

See my jr high and high school years were in the 90's and I don't have fond memories of them! I think if it had been in the 80's I would probably have rocked those years more so! Ha ha. Oh man the big hair. Well wait... do you live in the south, particularly texas? Because if you did than you could still rock some killer 80's hair. I had the bangs for sure. I kept the 80's bang look until about 1994. That was kinda sad now that I look back. ha ha. The 80's totally rocked!

Alas, I believe no has brought up the significance of TMNT in the 80's or Sonic the Hedgehog. Those shows were my favorites. Or what about ALF? I mean come on those are vital to that decade!

Teenage mutant ninja turtles was the first movie I ever saw in the theaters. ALF was also classic. my list was the first couple things that came to mind. I left out a lot! You got one major part wrong... Sonic the Hedgehog is a 90's thing though. Because it was all about Sega and Sega came out with the 90's really. I can't find the copyright but according to Sega.com, Sega Genisis came out in 1990 and Sonic The Hedgehog in 1991. Nice try...but still confusing 90's with 80's!
