Hello greeny, I am not sure which one is better. For me I think it depends who you really love and want to be with. To have a boy/girlfriend who was your friend for a long time can be good. It would be easier for you already knew each other and would just move to a different face in a deeper relationship that involves love. Of course it still depends if he/she loves you. On the other hand, there's also a danger of you loosing your friendship when the relationship does not work and you two broke up. It will be hard to go back as being friends just like before when that happens. Having a boy/girlfriend whom you just know not that long can also be good. If your really love him/her you'll give it the time to know them even deeper and a chance to grow together in the relationship. It all depends on the people involved in the relationship to make it better. I think it doesn't matter if you are friends before or have just met before you become boyfriend and girlfriend. Its a give and take relationship both should give it their best and effort to make the relationship better. :-)

I feel that someone who has known you a long time can be a better boyfriend/girlfriend and eventually lifetime lover than some stranger off the street. Plus on the outside there are a lot of harpies and serpents that can really pretend and end up hurting a person horribly.

From my own personal experience things go better when you have been friends with someone first. You already know all their quirks and whatnot, and know that there is a lasting relationship there. Some stranger may appear to be a great boy/girlfriend, but later down the road you may discover you don't really like anything about them. Also, when you're friends with someone first, you already know how comfortable you are with that person, and you know what kind of person they are, and that makes for a better relationship, in my opinion.
