Right now I am looking at the Athlon 64 single core for what gaming I do.
Everything I do right now is older stuff, and would not work well with a dual core. Even a lot of the newer games are not really optimized for dual core, but they are working on that.
Both AMD and Intel have patches to help with dual core gaming, but for now I will stick with what works the best.

The processor itself is about $55 through Newegg.
Tigerdirect is selling a processor/mboard combo for about $120
That's for the 4000+. The 3500+ is a few bucks cheaper.
Those are both socket 939, but the AM2's are running real close to the same prices.
Dual cores are a bit more of course but still not bad.

Any processor you buy is a Pentium if it is from intel. That is all they make.

See..processore are not the only thing that decides the Gaming performance of your system. There are many things to consider such as Onboard graphics(if any) ortherwise graphics card,Motherboard etc.
So if u have a motherboard with good onboard graphics or a decent graphics card and coupling it with a core 2 duo processor will work like a charm compared to that level AMD processor.
