Democracy or Dictatorship?

Ok as most know the US is considered a Democratic Republic, but to be frank it's more like a dressed up Dictatorship. We are suppose to be the land of the free yet so many of our "freedoms" are slowly being taken away from us "for our own good." WTF is that all about. What's even worse is people are just sitting back and letting it happen like its ok. We've got a president now who wants to dictact what religion this country should be, what food we should eat and how we should feel about war. We have two people running for office who want to tell us what we should do reguarding our own healthcare. How far are we willing to let the goverment go before we stand up and say enough? Do we have to give up every basic right we have before folks realize whats going on? They're telling us what to eat, what to drink, what we should and should't do with our bodies and yet no one seems to see anything wrong with this? Are people really that self consumed with things that they don't see whats really going on? Do you really think our goverment give a flying f'k about what happens to us now? Its all about money and power and frankly those that have it rule an those that don't are getting f'ked over again and again.

Yours is a minority opinion. So is mine. However, we can take comfort in the fact that we are correct.

Little good it'll do us when we are walking around all dressed alike and bar coded so that the goverment can keep track of us all.

Hmm... There you go again! Right again! I wish I had an answer for you. Guess, we just do the best we can to convince people.

I wouldnt say dictatorship I would say communism its set up so the rich kids get to go to haverd then right to Congress. I came up with a plan that may fix that everyone would vote on major issues like going to war or a tax increase this ENTIRE country would choose its future not just a few hundred people!

It has been suggested that our legislators only propose the laws and we the people vote on all of them. In this day and age, a secure encrypted internet connection could efficiently provide for this.
Congress is absolutely, completely oppossed to this. It robs them of their power and makes them less valuable to the special interests who bribe them.
It is a good idea and I'll support you in it.

what a concept, actually letting the people of this country vote on and have a say on what laws go into effect. Sounds oddly familiar, like an old fairy tale I heard as a kid. One where people were treated right by their goverment and the officals actually listened to what the people had to say. Hell I'd definatly vote for a world like that, sadly as long as those with money control the way of the goverment us common folk will never have a say.

I have to agree this country is turning into a dictatorship.
They are trying to take out rights, and also tell us what to do as you said.
There is ONE man who is against all this. And he is Ron Paul. He stands up for the people and the Constitution!
He is against big government. And He knows that giving up liberty for security leaves us with nothing. The only thing that could lead to is tyranny.
American people need to wake up NOW! And we must elect Ron Paul as our new President.

I agree that yeah, we're slowly turning into a country like all the ones we've ever disliked or critisized ourselves. Burning through the dictionary, like I said in another post..fascism, dictatorship, et cetera, et cetera.
And yes. Most people are doing nothing. But...that sortof evens the odds.
We, even though we're a minority. Maybe a million people in all. We do more than the average person. Which means our voice will be listened to if we speak loud enough.
The average person can be won over, if you hammer the truth in front of them long enough...sooner or later they'll be forced to believe it.
But yeah...it takes time. Too many of us thinking people didn't realize things soon enough. I wouldn't have been able to do anything sooner...I'm too young. But, so many others could've.
Teenagers today are only the result of their parents. True, plenty of the younger part of us that're a minority are from families who refuse to believe the truth. But many of us are from dissident families too.
Most teenagers don't care, because that's what they were taught to do. By the schools, by their parents, by practically everyone around them. They were taught early that things would be smoother if they just agreed with everything they were told, that they'd be safe if they ignored everything that was wrong with the world. That it couldn't happen to them, what happened to others.
What choices do we have? Well, that's a real good question. Here's another one. When these changes which have been slowly introduced are done...can you stand to let them take everything away from you? Can you stand to be a slave? Just another piece of a merciless machine?
Tell me then, what're your options?
Because..I can't. I can't do that, I can't become a part of that...but then, I never was much of a joiner, I can't follow the beat of someone else's drum. No matter how much I might want to. How much easier it might be.
You know what I've found?
The right thing is hardly ever easy and is often unpleasant. But when all's said and done...we're often glad we did the right thing.
The answers are there. If you want to know what the other option to not following this government's beat. It's right in front of you. It's not pleasant. It probably won't be fun. But alot of us, the minority are prepared.
If we're a dying breed, then we might as well go out with a bang and be remembered in history for not going along willingly. For keeping the moral high ground when it was easily not to.

Well considering you don't live in this country I your opinion doesn't really mean very much to me about what goes on here, cause frankly you have no idea. And no I'm not talking about commercials. You might wanna pick up a world news paper once in a while before you start replying to discussions you apperently know nothing about.

Freedom of speech also has never been about free speech only if you "play ball" with the reigning media driven agenda or certain viewpoints, but that is what its becoming. Maurice "Trix" Huxley, Trent Lott, Boxer, Feinstein, Durbin, and others have all gone on the record in one proposal or even as a point of action, against free speech.
I know what I'm talking about. Plus I already know free speech has its default limits like threats of harm and violence to others, so don't bring up things that are already common knowledge.
And the point about telling the citizenry what to eat, think and do is just a comparison to recent healthcare proposals, infringement on free speech rights, refusal to seriously improve the education system (and lack of real choice for many), and others just as examples.

If my opinion dont matter cause i dont agree with you, then this discussion aint much of a discussion, most people here speak of the same coin, wich is of no use. Sure, im not from the States, but that dosent mean im totaly ignorant of USA. We foreingners generaly get a more broader view in our media about your country, wich is impossible for you to get in your media, since its American.
theprogamer, media controling the general viewpoint aint nessecary a bad thing, if it was more open, it will not automaticly mean the public will be more aware, infact it would most likely be worse.
And come on, a healthcare proposal is a dictaturship telling people "what to eat"? lol come on. This is the very foundation of a society. Control, rules and guidelines is the most essentional form of civilization.

Completely ridiculous.... We haven't given up any rights. Privacy isn't a right. And the rights we are guaranteed can only be violated if you're a terrorist.
Telling us what to eat, telling us what religion to have? That is patently absurd. Not even a real coherent thought.
Tell the citizens of real dictatorships that the US is a dictatorship and they would laugh at you...

No it is not ridiculous, mister.
I know two cases of innocent american civilians being denied habeas corpus. And no one in any secret prison, being tortured at this very moment has EVER been charged of a crime.
So don't you dare say, "Only terrorists have their rights trampled."
You've not been everywhere, nor have you spoken with people who've personally seen this. So don't you dare talk like you know how it is.
I know and have met people who've faced very harsh treatment, who HAVE had their rights trampled on by both state government and those in the white house.
Habeas Corpus, your right to a fair trial is now optional. If they call you a terrorist, even if you're not..and believe me it has happened. And recently. Since they say you have no right to appeal to a judge to claim otherwise or prove it even...you can't prove that you're not a terrorist and therefore have that right.
It is almost as if you don't have that right, nowadays. Like it's a luxory or privilege...when you know well that it's a basic human right.
As for telling us what to eat, there is a dicussion going on now that food should be regulated. That certain ones should be banned or prohibited...or at minamum limited.
I haven't seen anything on religion yet, but just because I haven't heard anything, doesn't mean it's not goin' on. I know alot, but I don't know everything. As for what to wear...well there are rules and occasionally a few laws at state level bein' implemented about how we dress now.
Obviously, you haven't been paying attention, dear. You believe in the same world that the majority was, and though it's very cliche for me to tell you this...that world is something of a dream world, because..it's beginning to no longer exist.
I'm not sure how many times we have to tell you this. Loads of us have tried on mylot, but I think you still don't get it.
If you don't want to, fine. But don't expect us to live in a fantasy world. We're well aware we're the minority, that the government puts a very happy face on alot of terrible thing and that on the surface things look fine...but just beneathe that? It's definitely not.
I don't identify with the victimizers, sorry.

Preach it sister!!
I couldn't agree more and it's a shame that people are just laying back and letting it happen.
Maybe they should pass out jars of vaseline at the next ballots, because the voters are about to get screwed.
I think people are just too complacent. We have been lulled into this stupor and are so overloaded with worrying about making a living that we don't see what is going on around us.
I hope I never live to see the day, but a dictatorship is on its way for sure, unless something is being done NOW.

Part of the problem is in your first sentence. We are not considered a democratic republic, we are a constitutional republic. But the constituion and the republic part have been ignored and now we have all become democrats. Democracy = mob rule. Even the republicans now are just like democrats on they want to use mob rule for (some) different things than democrats do although there is plenty of overlap. The current crop of "republicans" are actually neocons and they came from the democrat side.
We have totally ignored the constitution which was set up with the specific intent of preventing this from happening. I for one am standing up for it and saying no. This is why I am spending all of my free time promoting Ron Paul. Today I spent the whole day at a local festival with 70,000 people in attendance. We had a Ron Paul booth and we passed out literature and got petitions to get his name on the primary ballot.
Do what you can too. Get out there and stop this. Ron Paul is the only hope we have.

From what I've heard about Ron Paul he's just as bad if not worse then the rest of them. I've asked around about him and was told that he use to be an OB/GYN doctor before going into politics and is extremly against abortions and any type of birth control for that matter. If that is the case there is no way in hell I'd ever vote for him.

You failed to mention the assault on free speech devilsangel and the fact that some outlets of free speech are really just propaganda pieces or government kiss butt networks. We've got the senate and both "parties" on the record wanting to quash avenues of free speech for many, especially those with the most vocal opinions and using the power of the government to do so. Did anyone get that!? They are gonna use the government to violate the constitution, take your rights away, broaden government power needlessly and empower specific groups and agendas. Well wouldn't be the first time. We've got Chinagate, The Memorial Day Coup, Koreagate, Unfairness Doctrine, voter fraud, donation fraud, criminal neglect and plenty of other things on the tab. This is ridiculous! And the worse part is there are so many sheeple who see one "political party" as the salvation of the nation while the other side is its demise and vice-versa. Does no one get that its all a one-card monte and both of these dictator parties will warp the country beyond recognition, just give it time. And its through different methods to, some of it through ignorance of the problems of the country and others of it through wasteful spending and action on the part of the government. We've got problems with education, healthcare, transportation and other issues. However, neither party has even a clue or a close to reasonable answer on these issues. All they do is just posture around, promising empty favors and all of it just to get the votes and the power. Once in office, neither party cares about the common citizen, its been this way for decades! I could write a book on this, of course no one would care since enough people think things are just fine and dandy like cotton candy! -_-
PS @ Devilsangel. Good discussion!
And if anyone needs something to get into a weekend spirit my 5th weekend thread is up.
