It can take awhile. I have earned 200 dollars since March of 2007 on Helium, but since Helium is non-exclusive I also submit my articles to AssociatedContent.com and I've made around 250 since July there. Out of the 200 I earned at Helium, 67 dollars of that was through the Marketplace or Contest earnings so it really can take a while for articles to make money for you.
I submit my articles to sites such as Reddit and some messageboards but alot of online communities frown upon putting your article links al over the community so be careful with certain sites like Digg. A lot of people claim success with Facebook and MySpace, I don't post often there only because that is for my friends and I'd rather not bog them down with my articles all the time!

The key to making money on Helium is to write for the Contests, and for the Marketplace. These are the only two spots I bother submitting article to. These articles get rated more often, so they make more money to begin with, and if you win a contest or get selected by a publisher you can make substantially more. I've made $15 for placing 4th-6th in 3 different contests, plus the money my articles have made otherwise. The articles seem to stay on the site forever, so eventually it does start to add up.

The trick is writing a bit more articles and promote the articles links by yourself. Remember you get paid when people read your articles. Therefore it wouldn't make sense if you just sit passively waiting for people to read your articles. Promote your writings on your own and you will soon see the earnings cranking up. Good luck!

That's a little less than what I've made. For being there for about four or five months, I've made a little over two dollars. If you're looking for quick cash, Helium definitely isn't really the place to be.
