Do you name inanimate objects in your life?

Clothing mannequins - mannequin
United States

I have a mannequin that I use to take pictures of clothes I sell on ebay. She has no head and only goes to the hips and has a hanger coming out of her neck. She also has huge boobs. She's quite the conversation starter when new people come into my apartment. I've named her Mary since she is such a simple soul with so little body! A lot of people name their cars and years ago when I drove I had one that I called Ophelia and when I would have a problem with her while I was driving such as starting to stall or slowing down for some reason I would always say..."Oh, I feel ya"....which is how I decided to name her that. Do you often give names to inanimate objects in your life? Where do you come up with the name and why?

lol I don't think I've named anything inanimate, at least not that I can remember. I do call my car the Cavy because it's a Chevy Cavalier, if that counts.

My chevy cavalier was Madden. I wish I had named it the Satan though. Because it was the Devil.

I name everything.I had plants that were on top of the bookcases. So I could remember how much water each plant got, I named all the plants. I have a huge colection of dolls and stuffed animals and they all have names. And all my instruments have names too.

This is not a habit that I've acquired, ctry, although I have often been amused by people who do it, lol. I think it's quaint, and a person who develops such an attachment to these objects is interesting. My daughter used to drive this old truck that she named "Matilda," and we would see her coming down the street and say, "Here comes Matilda!" My friend also gives her cars names. I don't know what makes some people do this though. I still say it's a cute habit.

I'm not sure why we do it either other than like you said becoming attached to it.

Not anymore, but I used to, when I had a lot of extra time on my hands. Sometimes I feel that inanimate objects have souls & deserve to have personal names.

ha ha HRm. I wonder who inspired this post? Obviously you should know that I, too, name inanimate objects. My computer, for instance, is Vincent Wolfgang. My Car is Mookie. My car before that was Madden. My first car was the "Hard As$ Bi0tch" except you know..not altered lamely. All of them were based on the three letters on my license plate. HAB...was obvious. JXB was Madden and that came from a long string of something that narrowed down to Madden. You don't want me to explain that. Mookie... well that's MNA for Mookie Needs Attention. I came up with mookie because it's a hatchback and there was this rap song back in the early 90's by a dude called Skee-Lo. It was called "I wish" and in it he said "I wish I had a brand new car, so far I got this hatchback and everywhere I go yo I gets laughed at"... then later he said "I would play ghetto games, name my kids ghetto names, little mookie, big al, lorraine". so I named it Mookie. I put way too much effort and thought into naming cars. I have tons of stuffed animals with names. I pretty much name everything. I mean, not usually furniture. I name things that can do stuff (like computers...they're kinda like people) your car... stuff like that.

I name everything. I actually have that same mannequin in my office and a guy one too. I should name those guys. lol. My cars ALL had names. My first car was named Shawn. I don't remember why but I think it was because it was green and reminded me of Irish and Shawn, I thought, was an Irish name. I cried when I sold Shawn but the new car had a name and so on and so on... I have a baby doll that someone gave me and her name is Sara. Many things I own have names. My son names his stuff too. When he was younger, he brought a big log into the house and named him Logums and slept with the thing for a couple years. When it was just time to get rid of it, he cried that we were killing Logums. He is 17 and the stupid log is still in his room (He doesn't sleep with it though. lol.) I got this habit from my mom who named everything. Once, there was an old shriveled orange in the fridge and it looked like an old person's face. She made eyes and a face on it and even put hair on it and named it. We had the hardest time throwing that thing out! So, yeah, lots of my stuff has names. Although the mannequins don't. I once called the male "Fred" but I just said, "Out of my way Fred, I gotta dress your girlfriend." I was selling stuff on eBay at the time. I have no idea where most names comes from but some have significance depending on what they are.

Hi Ctrymuziklvr, and yes, I do name the objects I use often or love names. My car has a name: Tota. And it comes spontaneously, all the names that I give to the inanimated objects. No idea from where, or why. They just come to me ;) TheFortunes
