do you give out your mobile number to strangers?

here in our country, there is such a thing as "textmate." there are pretty much line phone pals, except that they exchange messages through sms. the cellular phone makes it convenient and easy. many people had started relationships over it. but many more than been scammed, raped, or even killed because of hooking up with the wrong kind of people through text mates. now, my question is, do you also give out your mobile number to strangers? i think this is an absurd thing. you waste your money on the sms that you send and you go meeting with another person you don't know. sometimes, i am driven to think, don't they have good friends that can fill up their loneliness? why resort to such a thing? and don't they have friends who warn them of dangers such as this? if there aren't any willing preys, there will be no predators.
