CraigsList? Can you really make money there? Do they really offer LEGITIMATE writing jobs or spam? I've gone there and sent my cover letter and resume to someone, but have yet to hear from them. I did receive a bunch of spam in my inbox, however. If someone makes "real" (that is enough to either be a side or full job, not just pennies or anything less than $400.00 a month) money at Craigslist, please PM me. I'd love to take some of the jobs there.
Never heard of Suite101, thanks for the tip.

This is a great question. I think there are many of us writers out there who would love to find ways to earn money doing something we enjoy. Do you have much experience with writing for pay? Have you had much published before? Most print publications seem to want copies of previously published works which makes it hard if you haven't published yet. A catch-22 type situation.

It is difficult to break into print publishing, but there are a LOT of publishing houses. While MOST of the major ones will not even look at an unpublished writer, there are small, independent, and even pretty famous ones who will. Have you tried self-publishing? Or querying an agent?
As for internet writing, MyLot and Associated Content seem to be the best. If anyone can point out others that pay something of substance (not 1 cent a page view type sites). LuLu allows you to publish whole books for free and set the prices to them. I don't know if you are interested in book writing or short article writing, but I hope I've helped you in your quest to make money pursuing something you love.

I started writing for brijit.com recently, and am doing very well there. They pay $5.00 for each news abstract that they accept. They have a list of assignments and deadlines. The style and format are very strict, but once you have it down, it's easy. An abstract is only 60 to 100 words, so if you can keep your rate of acceptance high, it's worthwhile. If you're good at getting the gist of a news article and are able to summarize it, you can do well.

You can try this site if you'd like. I go there for advice all the time.
...www.wahm.com.....stands for Work At Home Moms.
When you get there on the left hand side of the page is the message boards....they have a section on writing and also on blogs......you might want to ask there as they are all pretty darn smart and give great advice.
I would love to be a freelance writer....I'm on this site just trying to practice to write a few articles somewhere..lol!
Oh yes, you can also try this site.....www.ratracerebellion.com......all work at home jobs including writing.
I am not affiliated with either of these sites, I just go and visit frequently.
Good Luck to you and I hope you find something worthwhile. And don't forget, which I'm sure you know already, do your research first.

Helium.com and AssociatedContent.com seem to be the best. Look me up on each my username is the same as on here and you can get an idea of the quality and what they expect on those sites.
