What are your opinions of a movie version of Stephen Kings The Dark Tower series?
I'm torn myself. On the one hand I would like the characters and my interpretations of descriptions to stay the same as they are in my head but on the other hand it could be quite exciting to see the characters come to life on a big screen.

Are they planning on making the series into movies? AHHHH! That would be terrible. I know my father and I wouldn't like it. I never have liked a Stephen King movie more than the actual book. The series is something kinda special to me. My father has read it and then gives it to me and we talk about the book. Something we share which would get lost in a movie. Hope they don't do this! I think right now there are just rumours that it might be made into a movie. Stephen King has said that it would have to be the most perfect circumstances for him to allow it to be made into a movie, so we'll have to trust him to make the right decision. It's so cool that you have someone to talk to about the series, I don't know anyone who has read or is interested in reading this series, and it was so frustrating when something exciting or dismaying happened in the series and I wanted to discuss it with anyone but no one knew or cared what I was talking about!

Thanks! I was a bit surprised that he would consider it, cause from what I heard the series is like a child to King. Well now your on Mylot you will find us out there to chat with about it!

Thanks for the update! I was wondering why I was seeing the books around in the stores all of a sudden.
Well I hope it is good and does the series some justice.

The idea of a series of movies based on this series concerns me for several reasons. For starters, I haven't seen a worthy film adaptation of any of King's work so far, not even the ones where he wrote the screenplay. too much gets lost in the translation from print to film.
Second, how long would these movies have to be? Even The Gunslinger, which is relatively short, would likely drag on for about three hours.
Finally, while it is a series there are at least two of the books that could almost stand alone as independent stories: Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla. In a situation like that you wind up with the same problem as Halloween III wherein you have a sequel that has little to do with the rest of the series.
Fortunately, there is a solution but the success of it would have everything to do with how it's presented. I think that an extended mini-series might be the answer to this dillemma, but it can't go to one of the major networks. A cable network like HBO or Showtime whould pick it up so that the necessary artistic freedom to present the story well and without deference to the FCC would be there. The Stand is a prime example of how a Stephen King story CAN be translated well to film but the constraints placed upon it by presenting it on a commercial network hampered the ability to really convey the horror of the subject. If the choice is between having a Dark Tower series done like The Stand and not having one at all, I vote for the latter.

I really like your solution. A mini-series on HBO or Showtime would be a different situation than a feature film. I'm with you completely on not wanting to see this on a major network, that would completely ruin it.
My concern with the series being turned in to a movie is that instead of being the long epics that they would need to be to convey all the necessary details, things would be left out and modified, and compressed into a two hour format.
