Has anyone had or heard of heel spurs ? I'd like to hear from people who have had them and what was done about it. My husband is having terrible trouble with heel spurs on his right foot. Exrays were done and he has them on both feet but so far just the right foot is sore. The doctor told him there was nothing that could be done because his sugar level was too high. Thank You for all replies.

My experience is that heel spurs and plantar fasciitis are connected... I have plantar fasciitis, and to relieve the pain, I do an exercise that I'll try to explain... hold on to the back of a chair. Put 1 leg back a foot or so behind, resting on the ball of the foot. Lower the heel until it touches the floor and hold for 10 seconds. Change feet. After doing this for a few days, increase the distance that you move the foot back by an inch or so. Soon, the Achilles tendons will be stretched out and more supple. I had bound my feet, tried footbaths, massage... nothing worked until I found this exercise. And its easy to do anywhere!

I have had 14 surgeries... I will do ANYTHING to avoid another one! It was such a relief for me to find that I could remedy this problem so simply, after months of feeling like I was walking on broken glass! I do it while I'm cooking, talking on the phone... just 4-5 at a time, several times a day, and my life was changed. I'm so glad its helping him! My hubby is diabetic, so I understand that aspect of all this as well. You are very welcome!

I don't know much about them, I have heard of them though. Have you checked on www.webmd.com you should be able to find out info from there. Good luck, I hope they get better. When your feet hurt everything hurts. And when a husband hurts, they can be a big pain in the you know what......

I feel for your husband I had spurs on my left foot in the arch of my heel bone and had to have surgery on it to have them tooken off. Is there a reason why his sugar level is to high right now. good luck with it.

It's a real power trip between hubby and the doctor. The reason it's a power struggle is YES there is a reason hubbys' sugar is high. He refuses to watch his diet and he's just not trying and the doctor is getting very impatient so as a result the doctor won't give a shot saying the needle can raise the sugar level and that would not be wise in this case.

A friend of my husband had them. He had surgery to take them out. Of course he had (or was supposed to be)off his feet for 6 weeks. Naturally, he did not stay off his feet.

I think men are bad for not doing as the doctor says.

The doctor is not correct. Go to a specialist who can perform an operation on his foot. My mother had the same problem and was operated on by an Orthopedic Surgeon.

We would have to go to the city as there isn't a specialist near us. It appears to be getting better with excercise. Still pretty sore but it's getting better.

There was just a discussion about this from another user within the last couple of days. My sister had them, at least on one foot, but I don't remember the reason being her sugar level was too high! She had surgery to have the spur removed. Did your husband go to a foot doctor? I can't believe he was told nothing could be done. I'd get another opinion.

Yes I realized that later that this post was done recently and I felt bad when I realized so I apoligized and how I wish everyone was that understanding. The reason the doctor doesn't want to give the shot is because it is known to raise the sugar level and hubbys' sugar level in already bad.

I can appreciate the fact that they want to take many precautions because of his sugar levels however I had heard or read that they can sometimes treat these with lasers? to break them down and that is not invasive and I would suggest you mention this to the doctor to see if possibly he could be a canidate? Hope you have better luck with it.

Well that's a good point because I have heard they can even use laser to break up gall stones so my goodness I can't see why that couldn't be possible. I told my hubby about your comment and he said when he has his next appointment he's going to ask about that. Thank You.

I never heard of anyone having them and have no idea what they are. What my trouble is is a high arch and very narrow ankles. I gather it has something to do with being diabetic or near that condition. I have heard that shoe inserts may relieve the problem. I gather it happens when your feet are quite flat, but not so sure about this.

I was found to have a heel spur in my left foot. I haven't gone to the podiatrist as of yet b/c hubbyis having back surgery tomorrow, but I plan too. My mom is also a diabetic and the dr. told her he would not operate on her awful bunions until her sugar was under control, he said she would not heal properly. I would however, get a 2nd opinion, your hubby should be able to have a steriod injection or something to control the pain. Hope he does get some releif from it.

The pain is getting better with doing the exercises # 2 Alamode has given us. The doctor made no move to refer hubby to a speciaslist, and wouldn't give him the needle because his sugar level is high and the doctor is not pleased with hubby.

The doctor told me that I had one quite a few years ago, only mine wasn't real bad. They said that they could cut it open and file the heel spur down. Since it wasn't real bad I didn't have it done. It rarely bothers me now so I'm glad that I didn't put myself through having it done although it would probably be worth it for someone who had a bad one.

The foot doctor I went to never mentioned anything about exercises or I would have tried them back then. I rarely have problems now, but now that I know I will try them when it does bother me.

If they return I's strongly suggest the foot exercises. My husband said he had these 25 years ago. At that time they gave him a needle and the pain left. This time the doctor won't do anything because his sugar level is up too high.

A long time friend of mine had them throughout high school. She was a gymnast and they drove her nuts. I don't recall her ever having surgery to fix them, but she doens't do gymnastics anymore. I am not sure if it's just a calcium build up that can go away over time if you stop bothering the site. I know her dismounts always aggravated them.

It is very painful I know from watching hubby and he's had to get up during the night to go to bathroom and there has been times he's had a terible time to walk.

I lady at the daycare I used to work at had a heel spur once. She said it was really painful. Her doctor ended up having to do a short, out patient surgery for her. He cut it out, but she couldn't walk on it without help for about a week I think. I hope he is able to do something about it soon.:)

Yes I guess they are very painful. I have never had this problem but I see how hubby is walking and I can tell it's hurting him a lot.
