I think tithing is very important but not for the wrong reasons. God doesn't need our money. He can do what he wants when he wants without us. What he does want however is a giving and selfless heart. A tithe of your income done with a selfless, giving heart is showing God your love for him as well as his people.
The free will that God has given us is something to be thankful for and God is most pleased when our free will is turned toward His will. Since His will is to show us what is best for us then we ought to show our thankfulness by giving back to Him and loving others.
If ones motivation for giving is to get back then you have missed the point of tithing. Give to give, not to get :o)
Luke 21: 1-4 reads
1As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.[a] 3"I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

Very well stated! I know several people church members who buy their pastors cars, houses and clothes and they are barely taking care of their own family. I don't have a problem giving and I strongly feel that God will bless me still if I tithe or not. You can give by donating to charities or simply giving to any needy person.

It's easy to be angry at the church, but I hope it's not directed at God just because of what church-goers do! We're all sinners and no one is perfect, so I hate it when people ruin the church experience for others. The Bible says to tithe. Most pastors are not rich, and they deserve to be paid for what they do. Churches give incredible amounts of money to people who desperately need it; they are very discreet about it. One of my friends' family gets a lot of money from the church and no one knows about it.

I attended church for 10 years of my life, and I've seen more abuse and manipulation of that widow woman scripture than any other!
Use your brain.
Did you ever think, if the pastor needs money, and he says God will"pour out the windows of Heaven" if we give, then why don't he give ME some money!
If you consider yourself a Christian or whatever you are, then READ YOUR BIBLE!
Chances are you are listening to a pastor. Many people depend on what the"pastor"says rather than reading it for themselves.
The Bible says to leave the tithes in the"storehouse". Do you know what the storehouse is? Does your family? The pastor? The congregation? Find out what the storehouse is for yourself! (of course they'll always say the church)
If you like to attend church regularly, you should help to support it,(be it 10% or only 2dollars,2000dollars or whatever) but not with the hopes that God will give it back to you.
I notice the pastors that really shove the tithing bit, rarely do anything to help out members of the church or the poor. Ask where the money goes.
If they seem more concerned with jazzing up the church rather than helping people, then you'd be better off giving your money to a homeless person on the street.
Remember Jesus said"When you help the least of them, you help Me". Jesus commands us to help the poor more than anything else.
Again, read your Bible.
Most pastors that press the tithing issue will rarely bring that one up. They shove that scripture under the rug, because they want you to give your money to them instead.
If you worship God, you are to do what He says, not what the pastor, or the majority of church members think you should do.
Besides, tithing was out of the Old Testament. The storehouse was a form of taxation, that helped out the poor or things that badly needed to get done. It's not the same today.
I wish I was the one that first came up with the"tithe to the church". I'd get a church, become the leader, and get very, very rich! (many have done this already)

I feel that tithing is extremely important. Yes, it does say in the Old Testament that we are to give 10%. In regard to the New Testament, it doesn't say specifically to tithe there, but it DOES say in Galatians 6:2-10 how we should prove our own work and to not be deceived for whatsoever a man soweth, he shall also reap. That's the jist of it, you can read it and see what you feel about it. For me personally, when things are going wrong financially, I have to look and see if I'm caught up on my tithes. It may sound superstitious, but I am not alone in this. I would recommend to pray to God about what he wants you to tithe. It's different for each person and in starting to tithe, 10% is a good, even amount to start with. I will pray for you also that the Lord reveal the plan He has for you.

The Old Testament says to give 10% but the New Testament does not mention it, so there are no clear guidelines. I think the point is to give to the church what you feel right, but it is important to give something. I have noticed that when I give tithes, I seem to have more money than usual! God blesses you in mysterious ways!

i most prefer donations than tithes...sometimes it's not given heartily unlike donations almost means it's from the heart...tithes is an obligations to the members...our church didn't support tithes but we accept donations for our worldwide works...our ministers have their own works and sidelines to support their daily needs and to their family...not depending on the tithes given by the members.

Yes, if we do not Tithe, we are Robbing ourselves of the many Blessings god will bestow upon us, just as we are robbing God. Yes, the Church needs and depends on the Tithes and offerings its members give to be able to survive, but to me it has to be a personal issue how a person sees this. Yes, it is Biblical to give, but until people see it as important there will be many never wanting to give.

Good question. Tithing was an Old Testement ritual. Churches claim to be New Testement churches while reaching back to the old rituals. The New Testement only says to give out of your abundance, and to give and it shall be given to you. This principal can be proven but it does not say we are required to give a certain amount.

If we don't tithe because we can't afford to, or because we don't believe in doing that, then we are not robbing anyone of anything! God gave us the power to choose, and that's that. If it was essential He would't have given us the power to choose, and He'd make sure we could all afford it!

I give a certain amount each month to the church. The old idea of tithing has changed to freely giving back a portion of the blessings God has given you. Money does leave you faster if you do not give back to God. The reason is that people say, well I do not have to tithe, so I can buy some unnecessary item or waste money. When you give a certain amount of money out of your income to God, that becomes part of your plan and you decide, for example, that painting your hair green and going to a party and getting drunk when you knew you would regret it and get sick afterwards is not the thing to do. So giving so much whether it is one, five, ten, or twenty percent will help you to manage your money and keep you from doing things you would regret, like in my case, buying a whole cheesecake and finishing it in one sitting.

I don't think so. I give money but I don't give as tithe. I don't give as tithe because I don't see New Testament underscoring that we should tithe. But it definitely teaches us to give.

Currently I am retired on a fixed income and I have a financial planner who gives ma an allowance after expenses..my allowance this week was $20.00..so on an average I give $ 5.00 to my church.
The pastor told there is a millionaire who belongs to the same congregation..but he did not give their name..and he only gave $ 5.00..last week i had four cent left over for spending money.
I feel great as this is the example of the widows mite..God loves the greatful giver...even if it is not a lot..its all we have.

I do not believe that tithing means giving 10% of everything specifically to the church. Remember what Jesus said about the woman who gave her two pennies having truly given more than the men who gave all their riches? I think that it's the gesture, the meaning, the faith behind the giving that counts. I don't believe it has to go to a church - give to a charitable cause, donate food or time or money to things that help make the world a better place, and God considers this your tithe.
