Fil-Am Doctors Degraded in Desperate Housewives

"Can I check those diplomas again? Because I would just like to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines," That was a throwaway line delivered from Teri Hatcher's character from the hit show "Desperate Housewives" where Hatcher's Susan Mayer character was questioning her gynecologist's suggestion that she may be going through menopause. What is your opinion on this?

This line is causing quite a stir not only here in the Philippines but abroad as well. It has certainly offended medical associations, our Dept of Health, the Philippine Embassy, medical schools and the Filipinos in general. If this was supposed to be a punchline I don't find it remotely funny. It's in poor taste and the producer should have had better sense than to put it out there for everyone to see and hear. Filipino doctors and nurses are some of the best and most hard-working professionals who have ever worked in the US healthcare system and this one line may or may not ruin it for them. Some may say that we are blowing this out of proportion but I don't think so.

I followed the link to the episode in question via a link in toni_nakama's post, and I must say I felt really sick after hearing Teri's character's line. I am absolutely, furiously livid at this hurtful slur, and I cannot understand how that line could have slipped the watchful eye of the head writer? Unless it was approved by the head writer too? Not only is the line insensitive, it also shows how ignorant the writers are of the contributions of Filipino medical workers (both as clinicians and researchers) to the global medical community as well. Like I mentioned in the two other posts, simply signing and sending off a petition is not enough: economic sanctions have to be done to make our displeasure known. Boycott the sponsors of the show and they will realize that not only do Filipinos have excellent medical training, they also have substantial economic clout. Boycotts and embargoes are a distinctly North American response to unpleasant situations, don't you think? So let us show that we have completely embraced the North American ethic and use the same tactics to get our point across!

I know the writers were trying to make a humorous plot for the series but looks like they went overboard with this one. I am a Filipino and I don't find it funny. Come to think of it, many Filipinos are able to pass the U.S. nursing board exam or NCLEX and there are many Filipino med workers in the U.S. I don't know why the writers thought it was funny to write that line. But what I know is Filipino medical workers in the U.S. and anywhere in the world are one of the best in terms of service and dedication to their field.

I heard it in the news as well this morning. Honestly I felt sad about it. It is somewhat discriminating. Wonder what will happen next. According to the news, Terry should apologize. Is she the one or should be the writers?

Ggaaiill, I think the writers should be the one to ask for an apology. Teri was just doing her role as an actress. What do you think? Thanks for responding by the way.

I honestly didn't think anything of this. But you do have a point, but it didn't personally offend me or anything. Actually in real life I know a lot of Filipino doctors and there's nothing wrong with them, in fact most of the doctors I know are foreign and they're all good doctors.

Bargaingirl, it's nice to hear that you didn't get offended and thank you for sharing that you didn't find anything wrong with Filipino doctors. By the way, what is your nationality? Thanks for responding.

Did you read that ABC issued an apology over this? I saw that somewhere, the headline, but didn't read the whole article.. And to answer your question, I'm American. Have a good day!

I just watch in the news awhile ago, base on the news, the producer of the show already apologizes for what happen. However other peoples (Filipino) still feel angry about the incident, they did not accept the apology and they want to show to be band to whole ASIAN country.

That didn't occur to me while I was watching it.... Now that you mention it though, that is a bit degrading to Filipino doctors. I think every one knew the point she was making.....

Oh..those people, that's why they get bombed! They attack even decent people like doctors who take care of them. I hope they would be more careful in what they say or do as they are not the only powerful country anymore...a careless remark by one of their dumbs may cause fights (an extreme scenario would be war or terrorist attacks to innocents) among people of different races..
