It is high time parents whole over the world need to discourage letting their children watch television for a long time . When they switch on the tv set they come across many channels which are not suitable for kids viewing these channels are non stopable as parents are not available to advise them to switch off the tv set or to see some other channels. A boy or a girl watches TV for 2 hrs at the age of 5or 6 it will be undoubtedly develop some behaviourable problems and poor social skills. This idiot box may be the main source of home entertainment for many kids it would have negative effects of heavy television viewing There were incidents that after viewing violence scenes in the t.v these children practised in real with siblings or neighbouring children in their homes and got injured. If they see a man jumping from a 4 storeyed building without knowing it only a camera trick they too jump from the balcony thinking if that man can jump why cant they...!! The result will be terrible .Parents must take some precaution to curtail lot of time being wasted by their children on sitting in front of the idiot box.. I feel that till a certain age parents must accompany kids while watching television..there are some good channels where the kids can learn something that benefits them and offcourse entertainment is also needed and there are many channels for providing those fun too.. I tutor students during the evening and many parents complain me that as soon as their kids come home from school or tutition they immediately sit in front of the television and sometimes when parents restrict them to watch tv ..they behave in a adament way.Helpless parents are forced as per the kids wish..the agony of parents is kids nowdays are not even interested to play any indoor /outdoor games..rather they watch more TV.. Do you fix time for your kids to watch TV? How do you tackle your when your children pleases or behave in a adament way to watch tv?

Hi subathra, hope u must be doing well Well again u r touching important social topic which need to be addresses. I cant comment much on it as my son is just 2 yrs old and he is more intresting in running around the house and on TV he tries to watch a kids channel called "BABY TV" its educational channel. As far as differnt channels are concern, The TV sets coming todays have LOCK and parents can LOCK such channels and only leave channels with good stuff. regarding duration, well it need to be trained from start so they develop habit accordingly, they should be trained to manage time accordingly. what else, parents needs to give proper time to kids, raising and grooming is full time job, and need devotion if both mother and father will be working then these problems will be raised

It si easier said than done.It is really very difficult to monitor the stuff children watch in TV.If you regulate also they watch in friends home or they discuss.Actually this inversion of too much Tv in the home has resulted in changes in the behaviorial patterns of the children. They are loosing there innocense far too early & it really need to be checked.

During the day time, in the absene of parents (in case both the parents go out for jobs) children when they come back, the entice the grand parents or sometimes no body will be there at home so they tune in TV. When parents come, they cannot help watching TV because that is the entertainment. In many Indian familities there is hardly a separate room for the child to study. Even if they have one, they tend to join the parents in watching the TV. Only during the examinations, did the parents become more serious and avoid tuning in TVs. It is better to have 1 hour fixed time for children to watch TV.

Suba, I complete agree with you that children now a days watch too much TV/CDs/DVDs. It appears to me that they have become slaves of TV. Everytime, they get an opportunity, they will just tune in on the TV, without realising that silly and useless stuff keep coming on most of the channels. TV is really spoiling our kids, but what to do, in today's fast world, other options have become limited and TV appears to cheapest and easiest method for passing time. Good Post indeed! Have a great day!

Well, I don't have a fix time for watching tv but it may go up till 6 hrs a day. Its not that I am addicted or something, but I can very well do my work in front of tv. I do my homework and studies in front of tv so its not much of a problem. And there are so many good shows out there for children which do not necessarily harm them.

Children today spend more time watching TV than do something else. The second is that they rather play with computers than go outdoors and play with their peers...unless it is an online game. Still, playing the traditional way, which involves mostly running, is a thing of the past. I dunno but kids before must have been a lot healthier than kids today because of this. Still, kids always know what makes them happy. Just because we are older does not mean that we can dictate and define happiness to them. They also know when they need to play outdoors and let loose with their peers, though it is not as often as before. Further still, it also depends if the kids do have access to TV and computers, be it at home or with the neighbors. Critical here is that kids must know that there is a time for everything. A time for work and a time for play, and we as adults are here to guide them, and have fun along the way.

I think children spent a lot of time for watching tv instead of getting involved in creative activities they just waste a lot of time in front of the idiot box,,of course television is an important source os informmation but they must not never be allowed to watch tv more than 3 hours a day

Children these days have many child related TV programs like cartoons and some comic movies. They could be addicted to such TV programmes and there is no doubt that kids spend too much time on TV and if no regualtory measures are taken, they could even lag behind in their academics. What I do as a parent is to be strict and allow watching TVs at particular times, beyond which no child should be watching TV in my house and they have followed this rule very well.

I think yes they do. I have seen my 3 yr old niece. She spends so much time watching TV. She mainly watches cartoons. But I think she is growing a bad habit as this habit can hamper her study and all. Nowadays children spend more time watching TV than doing some outdoor things. Itseally a point of concern.

Speaking for my nieces and nephews, yes they are and I blame thir parents for that, why? they allow them to watch too much television. I agree with you, parenst should set a limitation on kids TV time and they should know what programs they are watching. I hope I can do that when I become a parent too.Because I know my sisters want them but just cannot do better as they are both working and is often out of the house.

yes, I do limit the timings for TV for my teenage daughter. I also monitor the channel she is watching. In this way she can have her way to watch TV and I too can control the content and the timings. I feel that time should be given to kids to watch TV along with certain conditions such as completing homework and after an outdoor playtime of 30 min. In this way they get both physical and mental relaxations.

Our daughter rarely ever watches tv. If she does it is at a friends house, because we have no tv service at home. If we watch anything at home it is a movie and that is maybe once a week.
