Okay guys, it's official...I'm old as dirt! I went to the eye doctor and I now have bifocals. Of course I got the ones without lines hoping that every person I talk to won't know! Ha! They came in today and I went to pick them up. There is no way I can wear these things! I have a headache already! Please help...what do you do to get used to them? Any tips?

I've worn bifocals for a few years but I never wear them at the computer as it's to hard to type and read the screen with them on for some reason. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I never wore glasses till I was 50 years old and this is what happened. One day I tried to read some very small writing on a jar of cream and realized I couldn't see anything but blured words. I went to get my eyes checked and at the age of 50 I'm told I am far sighted nothing to worry about at my age. The problem however was I needed bifocals. The doctor said it was unfortunate that my very first pair of glasses had to be bifocals. The day I went to get the glasses my hubby had that day off from work so we took the truck into town to get these glasses. I tried to tell everyone then I couldn't see properly, but I was told to give it a chance. We live about a 3/4 hour away from the city and my husband was driving I did nothing but complain and he told me to keep the glasses on or I'd never get used to them. Well at one point I told him to stop the truck I was going to be sick. When I got home I had the biggest headache and sick stomach ever. I called the office the next day finally and told them I could not wear these glasses. They were happy to hear from me because they had given me someone elses glasses. I only need to use mine for reading and using the computer. I like the ones that are mine hehehe Take Care my friend.

Hubby says, "Just keep wearing them". personally, I did not have trouble with them. I guess I am just used to having bad vision or headaches anyway. Probably you will want to rest your eyes periodically to get used to them. I had a friend who had all kinds of trouble with the lineless kind, but not with the lined ones. What it boiled down to is that she frequently focused through the place the corrections merged, and it made her dizzy and nauseous. Things seemed to swim. To me that says that whoever measured did not put the corrections in the correct place for your eyes. Good luck, and hang in there.

You are not as old as dirt. Sorry, I can't give you any helpful tips, but I am in the same boat, except that I haven't taken the plunge. I am hoping to grow new and stronger eyes to avoid wearing bifocals. You gotta think from the healthy side of things, i believe.

I have had to wear bifocals for several years now. My first pair had the lines. They were hitious!! I hated them. Then they came out with the noline ones. They are so much easier to get used to than the ones with lines. If you take a book and sit down, move your eyes until you know where the bifocal starts and where it ends. Then adjust your glasses so they are out of your way so to speak. Sometimes they have to be just slightly down on your nose. Once you have it all figured out, it will be easier to walk in them without falling. LOL Yep, I feel off the sidewalk the first day I got mine. LOL

I know exactly what you mean!! I had a horrible experience with a WalMart eye doctor a few years ago while trying to get my 'old eyes' to adjust. I tried 3 different sets of contacts, none of which I could wear. He kept telling me my eyes would adjust. I had to wear two different ones and I couldn't see 20 feet in front of me! Finally, I got glasses, progressive lenses. It took awhile to get used to them, and even still, I don't really like them. I carry them around in their case or on my shirt, more than I wear them, but I keep them on hand in case I need to read a label or something!! Gettin' old ain't for sissies!!

My husband and I both had to start wearing bifocals at 40. We're 57 now. So, I can't remember that getting used to them was too big a deal, but it's been awhile. I know getting used to new glasses at all usually takes a little adjustment, so I suppose it's logical, I just can't remember. LOL. I know that looking to the side without moving your head is weird with those no-line bifocals. There is only a very small area where the vision is just right. That does take some getting used to, but I can't imagine it would give you a headache. Were you just using that as an expression? If so, just be patient. It might take a few days. Of course, since I'm answering this really old discussion, it's probably a done deal now. LOL

I had headaches for a few days. It took a week and a half for me to get used to mine actually. I have no hints other than just wear them and your eyes will grow accustomed to the change. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

SOrry, I won't do that route. I have seen to many people twisting their necks and tilting their heads to use them. I do not need lenses for reading, but I need them for distance, but my eyes can't adjust to wearing glasses when I am reading. My optometrist told me to wear a contact in my right eye (my dominant eye) for distance. My left eye gets nothing, it is used for reading. I have been doing this for about 8 years now and it works great..no problems.
