How do you choose one or more cats to adopt at an animal shelter

When I lost my Tabitha last year, I decided to adopt another cat at the local shelter and wound up bringing Waffles, who is now 3 years old, home. I made a hard decision to choose her because she stepped down from her perch in her cage and came to me. The other cat, named Katherine, that I was considering just sat and stared at me with her large round green eyes. Poor thing was in the shelter for so long and probably gave up on being adopted....
Then a week later, I went back, thinking I'd adopt Katherine after all, when I saw Columbus, who is now 11 years old. He sauntered over to me, rubbed against my legs and let me pet him. I adopted him as soon as he came from the shelter's vet.
Initially, I really didn't want to go to any shelter, fearing that I would bring all of those cats home with me.
If you adopt a cat from a shelter, how to you choose which one to bring home?

its so difficult to choose which one that should be adopted in pet shelter. if i m able, i would like to adopt all of them. so the only thing that i do is telling my heart that i cant take all of them and in pet shelter, they already treated well. thats i try to convince in my heart when i adopted my cat, sheilla.
its little bit strange how i choose her to be my adopted cat. every cats seem so cute and lovely. so on that time, i just whispering randomly slowly name which came up in my mind. that was "sheilla" and guess what, a cat which having 3 colors (white, black, and orange) suddenly coming to me. i asked to the pet shelter guard, what was exactly name the cat which coming to me closely. He just said no name for her only number which tattoed in right ears to be the name. Sheilla was having number A5. i just so surpised when i heard this. thats why i decided to pick she to be my cat adopted :)

I got my cat from a shelter. I initially narrowed it down by age, as I didn't want a cat that was already over ten years old(the pickings where slim at the shelter I went to at the time). I then had the remainders brought in to me one at a time. Maurice was the only one who warmed up to me, the other cats just kept staring at the door and didn't care who was in the room.
So the choice for me was pretty simple for me as Maurice came over to me and was like, "So, hey.... you got a toy or treat in your hand foe me?"

Yes, I know that feeling that if I go to a shelter looking for a cat to adopt, I'd want to take all of them. Impossible of course. It's interesting to see in your post and in some of the other comments that it's the cat who makes the first move because that's what happened when my sister went to adopt a cat. She went as she said "Looking for a nice female lapcat" and she came back with a big male cat who she says "Is no-bodies lapcat!" He of course selected her and not the other way round.:)She called him Bruno, a name which suits him very well.

I have adopted 2 cats from shelters. And, I chose the ones that just responded the best to us. My first cat (skippy) has been with us for 10 years.... she just was so sweet when I met her loved kids etc. The next one (Rex) I took him because he was abandoned on my son's birthday. I couldn't believe the coincidence and took him. He is AWESOME. Skippy and rex fight alot but I think they really love each other.

Hi Scribe. Haha, I understand your feeling, I used to do the same thing when all the dogs looking at me using their innocent eyes.
I don't really use to pick, I mean I will just follow my feeling. That kind of feeling will tell me,"it's you". Haha. I just just pick her out, I mean my dog.

This is going to sound weird but I adopted my cats (one from the vet and one from a pet store that takes in local kittens) because they asked me to take them home. I can't explain it and I know it sounds weird and mystical and stuff. But that is how is was.

That's a toughie-- we operate a rescue and go into animal controls and want to rescue them all--- but we simply cannot do that. What we do is try to match up the personality of the cat and the owner. ASK at the shelter and explain what you are looking for and they should be better able to assist you in making such an important decision.
