I dont wash my rice before cooking it. I never really thought about rinsing it. Why do you rinse yours? Is there a certain benefit to rinsing the rice?

well my grandpa has farm and we used to plant rice.. and everytime we harvest that we will bring that to the city and bring it to the machine that used to get the shell off? and there were some dust on it... and when we sell it to buyers i dont know if they will pack it right away or they clean it first...
so if you will try to wash the rice once you will see that the water was not that clear...

Lightning I dont know but I was taught that.. I guess it is our culture too. For me alot of things pass through it and I beleive for hygienic purpose it should be washed. It cooks alot quicker when it is washed too. Atleast for me.
I share a kitchen so you knwo I dotn cook as often but whenever I put on my post of cie to steam it finishes quicker than my neighbour's. She washes hers too but not as often as I do. I saw her watching me yesterday in the kitchen and her eyes popped open when she saw the maoutn of times I washed my rice.

i wash rice 3 times or more before cooking. We always eat rice so we make sure that it is clean. Like in vegetables we wash it first before cooking to wash away all the chemicals that is being sprayed on it.

Well my friends, in-case you still don't know I also love to cook aside from reading Xerex!;)LoL
Cooking rice is really difficult, as it may look easy when you're just watching. There are different variations of rice, some need more water, some are just exact and some needs less. I've learned cooking rice when I was still in grade school, it's the very first food I learned preparing.
As for washing the rice, I only wash it twice since my third is the water that is needed for the rice to get cooked. Sometimes if I'm cooking our meal, I also use the second-washed water for soups or as a stock!;) Others say that the food would taste good, but I don't see any difference at all. But I think it does serve a purpose, that is to conserve water and use it wisely!LOL

I do love to sing, but sometimes I still have problems reaching the exact pitch since my long-time smoking affected by vocal chords in a way!:( I used to sing in falsetto, but it's impossible for me to do that now. I'm a pure music-lover and a fan of great songs althrough the years, I just hope that my former vocal talent would return again as I've already stopped from smoking.
As for cooking, I don't read zerez while I'm in the kitchen. I don't do this, because I observe "safety first!" LoL Wehehe!

hmmmmm... thats why i didnt make smoking as a habit coz its not good for my voice (brokenhearted before thats why i tried to smoke hehehe)... i noticed that everytime i smoke i cant sing 3 songs properly...so i stop it coz singing is my first priority...
my goodness pal! what have you done to your talent!!!!! hmmp! e2 batuhin kita kalabasa!!! imagine u do falceto? that was hard!!! you must have a good talent!!...
oh wekk, since you stop smoking already i think its not that hard to get that voice again... you just have to practice.. i stop singing for almost 2 years now, nangangalawang na me but i do practice everyday to make it better... practice makes perfect...
so you can practice singing and at the same time reading xerex

hello jHoEn16,
its a genuine thing to wash those that are used for edible purpose as a precaution.because we don't know how much dirt and germs they have.and rice is no new to it.
rice is our main food here.we take it atleast once a day or may be in all meals.and here the way grains are packed is disgusting.even if they come sealed, they contain all kinds of dirt and wastes.sometimes they contain colored stones also.ofcourse that is done intentionally by the manufacturers.
so before cooking we have to separate those stones, then wash it several times until it is confirmed that they are clean now.then we cook it into rice.

Now this is interesting. I have never even thought about washing rice before cooking it but it does make sense. I do pick through and wash my dry beans before cooking them. I do love to eat rice, I like the white rice better than the brown rice.

I think you need wash anything that goes into your body, escpecially the food. I wash my rice 2-3 times or until the water runs transparent after the wash. You need to wash esepecially the brown rice which has lot of dust and other waste particles.

We Bengalis are famous for our boiled rice and Indians in general love rice too. Personally speaking, at home we wash our rice 5 to 6 times before putting it in boiling water. Rice has many impurities and it takes several washes before we think it clean enough for consumption.

My Nan always taught me to wash rice under cold running water for a moment or so, apparently to cleans the grains of excess starch and helps to stop the rice sticking together

Yup, my mum always washes the rice 4x before cooking it. People should be more hygenic, that rice might contain dirty particles which could enter our body :-)

Hi jHoEn16! Yes, i do wash the rice before I cooked it and I washed it for about two to three times. Someone told me not to overwashed it because the nutrients that are in teh rice are being washed away so we just have to be careful on washing. But I guess I still wash my rice twice or thrice so as to just to content myself that I have cleaned it thoroughly. Take care and have a nice day.

rice has to be washed of course. in our house we do it only twice. my mother said too much washing can make the rice lose its nutrients. i dont know if there's a scientific basis for it. LOL

Back in Indo, we always wash our rice first...3 times as well.
But now here in Finland I don't need to wash rice 'coz it's packed in boxes and it's clean already. ;-D
