What do you do when your back hurts?

I guess I pulled a muscle in my back yesterday.
I'm not in excruciating pain, but it hurts!
It makes everything I want to do more uncomfortable.
Do you get backaches. What do you use to make it feel better? Do you just try to ignore the pain and go on as usual or do you pamper yourself a little bit and maybe put some things off until the pain goes away?

They actually make some patches for back aches now that apply heat to the area and really help alot. Take some tylenol and sleep on a heating pad if you can't get these patches. Should feel better in no time

There is also a magnetic belt wrap for the spine. It wraps like a towel aropund the rib cage etc. It has about 50 small magnets and uses the generating forces between the poles of the magnets to ease pain. I have one and it soes work somewhat. Not great but it does ease my pain.

I was thinking about those sticky hot pat things. I got one as a free sample once. I'm not sure where it is now, but it did look like a good idea. I may go buy some.
I've been taking advil, but I haven't felt much of a difference after I've taken them from how I felt before I took them.
Do you think tylenol might be better for pain than advil?

my grandma used to get juice from ginger. ginger juice and starch then rub it at the back. put cheese cloth and tomorrow the ache will disappear. now that grandma is no longer around i just rub some vaporub at my back but for me ginger juice and starch is much more effective.

I've never heard of that. When I was younger I didn't believe in natural remedies. I have a lot more respect for them now.

growing up with a grandma as our neighbor she has a lot of herbal medicine in mind. she even let us drink honey with minced garlic when we have cough, oh goodness. it was really effective but it doesnt taste good. so we keep to ourselves whenever we have cough.

There has been only one time that was not able to pamper myself. This is when I was working as a caretaker and the lady was twice my size at that time. I had to bite the bullet and accept the pain.
What I will do when I can relax is get someone to massage my back with some Ben Gay, it works great. I will late down with my knees up, to take pressure off of the curve in my back. If it is really bad, then I will go to the doctor and get some muscle relaxers. However, these put me to sleep, so use your best judgement when taking them.

Well if it's not your kidneys acting up,(sometimes kidney problems will make your back ache, my son-in-law passed some stones that were giving him problems), have your husband give you a backrub on the area that is giving you the ache, you can use deepheat or an analgesic rub (which we used in sports) in that particular area, or even those patches that she was talking about!
Also you can use a heating pad, that helps sometimes!

Lay back with a pillow on the spine or area of pain and get some rest but only for a few hours or a couple of days. (too long and you may stiffen up)
Take tylenol or bayer for body pain.
If you can use icy hot I find thats effective.
A relaxing hot bath can help relax the muscles as well.
If you want to numb the pain or if you prefer cool treatment try an icepack
Increase consumption of bananas, tomatoes, potatoes (or just get more potassium and serotonin producing foods)

I generally try to put a heating pad on my back or take a hot bath. I also pamper myself. When you injure your back you don't want to over due it because you could cause more injury. Wait until your back is better before doing anything that could hurt it more.

Im sorry your back is hurting you. I would take some aleeve and get a heating pad if you have one. Also they have these heat raps now. That might relieve some of the pain for you. And I hope your back feels better.

When my back hurts, I'll wait until the kids are asleep and then run myself a hot bath so that I can soak it as long as possible. I'll also take either Motrin or Tylenol, and sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs.
Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon!

I take two aspirins and I use a muscle pain reliever cream like Aspercreme or Ben Gay Or Icy Hot.If you can't take aspirin, take an Advil. I hope you feel better.

Aspercreme doesn't have any odor.Take it easy. I know it is hard for a good mother to do but don't do too much.

Thanks. I've avoided the cremes but I might try some.
Usually it doesn't last much longer than a day. this Ttime it's lasted a little longer. I was feeling better for a little while. I'm starting to ache a little bit again now, but that's probably because I was a little more active today.

I pulled something in my back a while back that sent me to the hospital it was so painful. I guess I'm just not as young as I used to be. When I hurt my back, I just did alot of Heat on it, bedrest and NO lifting or pulling.

backaches are such a pain. i think that heat (especially moist heat) helps to soothe it some. I might stand in a hot shower with my back towards the spigot and let the water run over my back....
medicinally I like those menthol heat patches
there is a rubin called HEAT that works nice
or even bengay
a heating pad is nice to sit up against
lieing down aggravates a back ache for me

take 600mg of ibuprofen, 1 pill of methacarbamol (musle relaxor) and it works like a charm.
A lot of people saying that it makes them sleepy, but for some reason it makes me hyper. I sleep very lightly if i take it, b ut it does take care of back ache at no time. Usually its gone within 20 minutes

Wow you have so many responses! This discussion is 4 years old so i guess it's finished now but i was happy to browse through the comments left by other mylotters, All 6 pages of them!
I just took two panadols, and a tramadol lol but im not exactly sure what the second pill is all i know is that it is a prescription medication of my mothers for pain and i have just tried it then and am waiting for results.
My back pain more feels like my spine is out of line, maybe a visit to the chriopractor is in order for long term relief. I will also try sleeping on a heat padas suggested by another poster.

I do get backaches when I stay up late in front of my computer. I don’t put anything on it like cream or something; I just go to my bed and rest it for a while. Most reason of my back pain is that I don’t change position for a very long time so I used to change position every now and then when I know I’m going to sit down for a long time.

I can empathise honey - after all I have had serious back problems for a year and a half! Try not to seize up - try a heating pad or a tens machine if you have access to one - if that doesn't help then you should definitely see your doctor - don't let the problem get worse - believe me it is no fun! Hope you heal quickly xxx

When I pull a muscle in my back there's not much I can do but lay down and try to relax and whine to my girlfriend about how much it hurts.lol Maybe take some muscle relaxers but other then that I pretty much ride out the pain till its gone and I can move again.

I started a new job and I've been coming home with a lot more backaches lately. I always try to do plenty of stretches in the morning and when I get home. It helps some. I mostly just have to ignore it though. A heating pad also works for me.

Hi miamilady! I hope you are feeling better now. I usually have backaches just above of my hips once in awhile usually when I stand up for a longer time and when I have my period. What I usually do is just lie down and realx for awhile or until the pain is gone and if my husband is home, he usually gives me a massage. Take care and have a nice day.

I have researched and written an article about Infrared Heat Therapy at http://ezinearticles.com/?id=788011 . Infrared Rays penetrate deep into soft tissue, helping improve circulation and relieve pain. There is a long list of benefits from Infrared Heat Therapy, but as someone who suffers from back pain myself, I find the pain relief itself to be completely worth it. Check it out at the website above or visit my company's website at www.activeforever.com for more info. Hope that helps!
