When you go to a hair salon, do you tip the person who washes your hair?

Are we supposed to tip the person who washes our hair or just the person who styles it? I don't often go to "salons". My hair is long and I don't get it cut often. I've gone to supercuts and hair cuttery as often (if not more often) than I've gone to the higher end salons. I don't know if I'm supposed to tip the hair washer or not.

i must admit, i don't tip the person that washes my hair, unless it is the girl that does my hair. i know that i should, but most of the time i come with my hair washed already and only asked that they wash the conditioner out. so how much does one tip to the person that rinses out the conditioner?

hi... normally, i tip the cutter... hmm... i am always on the run so i dont have my hair shampooed unless i was really into relaxing and unwinding... then i will tip the one who shampooed my hair, but not as much as i gave the hair cutter...

Well the last hairdresser I went to was the one that washed and did everything to my hair and I did give her a large tip for the great job she did.

I used to be a hairstylist and I was shocked when I was in Cosmetology school that we got tipped. I had no idea that people tipped hair stylists. I'm now amazed at how many people don't know or just don't tip the stylist. I don't do that anymore, but I now make sure to tip them because it was gas or food money for a lot of the girls I was in class with.

Hi Miami, In the days that I "used" to go to the salon I wouldnt. It was usually the person cutting my hair that washed it, and it was their shop and they were already getting paid so why pay them more, in my case, especially when they were going to screw up anyway. Same went when I visited salon chains, I dont see a need to tip a hair washer. See, I have shoulder length naturally curly hair, and it seems that no matter where I went to get my hair cut, they always cut it too short. Like they didnt learn in beauty school that cutting curly hair is DIFFERENT than cutting straight hair. Or its like they are thinking that "pulling" it straight to cut it is going to be that length when its dried. My curls dry in spirals so it gets a good 2 inches shorter once its dried. When its wet, and Ive combed it out, it falls down to the center of my back, when its dried its about a half inch past my shoulders. Even if I beg and plead with them to only TRIM it they still cut it! and then Im left with a very short hair cut that I hate.....I stopped going to salons and learned how to properly trim my own hair. And in the event that I would like a new style, then I would consider allowing a salon to do it. LOL didnt realise this would be such a touchy subject eh? LOL Bay xx

It depends on how your experience was. You have to go by your gut. In my opinion, tips should not be expected but earned.

We don't have this habit here. It is no need to give tip to the people who washes your hair.

No, here where we live (The Netherlands) we get out head washed by the same person who is doing your hair, and we never leave tips to hair dresser either. No one does here really TheFortunes

Yes, i gave tip to those people who assisted me when i seek their services inside a salon. It is my way of saying thank you for giving me the kind of service i wanted from them. And i once work as a rank and file. i know it is a big help for them.

Yup. It's customary to tip the person who washes your hair. Generally they get anywhere between $2.00 - $4.00

It is usually the same person who cuts and washes my hair, so yes, I tip that person.

I didn't use to go to hair salons except maybe once every 3 years. I had long straight hair so I cut it myself even if I wanted layers or coloring. Hair Salons to me were for a wedding or something. But now I am thinking I will go more often to get styled and colored. So far I have noticed the girl who washes the hair is the girl who styles. I have also noticed that people tip. So the last two times I have tipped out of mere peer pressure I guess. But I decided the last time I tipped is going to be the last time. I just cannot believe that a 60 dollar haircut or a 120.00 for a complete look with color doesn't not include a very good wage for these girls. No more tipping!

I only give a tip if I'm happy with how the person has handled me regardless of the job she has done for me.

Generaly, my stylist washes my hair so I don't have that problem but, if someone else does it, I will give them a couple of bucks. I actually hate tipping but do it generously because my mom was a waitress for years and needed those tips badly. So, yes, I will tip the hair washer but I usually don't have to worry since one person will wash and style my hair so I just tip her at the end.
