I wouldn't say necessary was the right word. Helpful. Yes. There are plenty of ways a student can get by without a computer. Borrowing others. Going to the library. Using school computers. But it's a lot easier and probably less stressful for the student if they have their own computer. So they don't need to work on anyones time but their own.

I don't think it is necessary for a child to have their own personal computer. My daughter does have one in her room, but it isn't even hooked up. She uses ours downstairs. The computer and internet access is a very handy tool for kids to help with their homework and projects. It has alleviated the need to go to the library and do research. Being able to type up reports and print pictures and such also helps them get along further in school. It makes their reports look more professional and much more neat.

I think it is becoming very important to at least have one computer in the home. Any given night the children can be given assignments that they need to research for and the CAP site is about a half hour drive away. We have a computer in the living room and my children have computers in their rooms. Though I don't think it is "NEEDED" for them to have their own, it does come in handy that other people can have access to the net while another is using another one for school work.
