It is very sad, But the parents should have done a better job keeping an eye on her. There are signs posted saying it is dangerous to go need the edge. My heart goes out to the family.

I've never been there but I always wonder how possible it would be to have that happen. When they spent all that money to make it possible to stand out over it I worried even more. That is so sad, my heart goes out to the family.

Oh my gosh! A four year old! How could they let their four year old just walk on the edge like that! If I were there with a 4 year old I would be carrying them the whole time! I'm just really protective though. But I do agree that they should have had a better eye on them. Actually, one of her parents should have been holding her hand at least!
I do feel for the family. The poor dad running down the cliff to try to save her. What a terrible image! What a sad, sad story :(

How awful for her family. Some of the families I work with have gone to the Grand Canyon, but their kids are older, so I think something like this is less likely.

That is so sad.I hate to saythis this but what were the parents thinking. If I had my child there I would not lose grip off their hand.I have never been to the Grand Canyon. But I flew over it going to Las Vegas. From the air it looks huge!So I can only imagine what it looks like onthe ground. So sorry for the parents! They have to be feeling guilty.

I'm so sick from hearing this story.
That is a freak accident and I can't imagine ever having a child of mine die.
This could of been avoided, yes, but my god, what an awful story.
I would never take my 5 year old to a place like this. Heck, everytime I drive by he Canyon, I freak out. I hate it and it has always freaked me out.
I don't understand why this child wasn't holding a parents hand.
Poor baby.
I hope the family can learn to cope.

Oh my gosh that is terribly sad. I agree that the parent's should have been watching her better. I would never take my kids to the Grand Canyon, but if I did I would not let them anywhere near the edge. Not even within 100 feet. I would be too worried. My heart also goes out to the family. That is such a trajedy.

Why was not there a rail around the edge? We have them along the trail walks up here in Canada. I think the Park authorities should have made sure there was a rail, one designed so that children cannot go over, and that they have an extra guide. And people have to realize that these are children, not miniature adults. They can get into danger, so one has to watch them at all times. Maybe they should bring back the harness. My brother had one when he was a little boy and I know a friend of mine who used one on her little girl because she was the type who would run away when no one was looking.

This is very sad. I remember going to places similar and our mom freaking out when we went to close to the edge. It was mostly because she is afraid of heights, but also because she was afraid we would fall. We used to mess with her as teenagers. Now though, as a mother I understand more. Do you know that the parents weren't keeping an eye on her? I wasn't able to bring the story up so I wasn't sure exactly what it said. Maybe she was right there beside them and just slipped and it was too late.

This is very sad. Neither myself or my husband would ever even think of taking our children to a place like this

That is so sad.
It's so easy to fall at the Grand Canyon. The trails are very steep. When I was out there, the only reason my friend didn't get a speeding ticket was because there had been an accident in the canyon and the park ranger guy needed to keep the radios open. None of us went even close to the edge, even when there was a barrier.

What a dreadful thing to happen and of course it must be devastating for the parents. But I can't help wondering what the heck they were thinking of allowing a four year old anywhere near the edge. Or at least why were they not holding her hand? I know it's easy to be wise after the event but really, these things would seem like common sense to me and most other parents I would imagine. However, I guess those questions will torment them for the rest of their lives now.
Personally I wouldn't take a child that age there anyway, in fact it's highly unlikely I would be going anywhere near the edge myself. Just looking at the photograph makes me feel slightly ill.

How sad I am for the family. I've never been to the Grand Canyon but since I am not fond of heights, I wouldn't let anyone be near the edge. Holding hands is one way to hopefully prevent something like this happening again.
