On Friday night my partener, friends and I went for a night out in Manchester City centre.
At the end of the night we where at a takeaway still in the city centre when a fight broke out. There was 5 or 6 men beating up one man on his own. It was a proper savage beating.
Now it must of been a minute or two before we noticed what was going on there was around 3,000 people on the streets and not one person had jumped in or tried to intervien.
When we noticed what was happening and saw how much this man was being beaten up one of my friends and I went over and protected this man who was now unconsious on the floor until the police came.
What I cant get my head around is why out of 3,000 plus people did not one of them try to help. If you saw this happening would you try and help or would you simply walk by.
I really cant understand how someone can stand by and watch another person being hurt. Out of all those people how did nothing if it was them that where being hurt would they be happy knowing that no one cared enough to stop it.
Now I'm a big bloke as is my brother 6ft 6 and 6ft 7 but we're not fighters and yes we could of got hurt but if everyone who saw this from happening stood up and tried to intervien then this fight would of stopped straight away.

im a girl so i definitely wouldnt want to come between fighting men. what i would do however is to immediately call the cops and tell them what's happening and that someone is being badly beaten.
maybe because those people didnt want to meddle with those guys fighting and they dont want to get hurt just in case they will be caught up with the fight. maybe they just want to watch a live fight for free. ugh. i hate those kind of people.

I agree with you but when i gave my statement to the police the police man said they didnt recieve any calls it was the CCTV operator who sent them.
Its not even hard to contact the police from the city centre there are panic buttons on the walls so in an emergency all you have to do i press a button and the police come.

I would have tried to do something, even if it was just to call the authorities. I probably wouldn't have been able to do much as a 5'4 female.:P I can't stand to see people just standing around or just gawking at stuff like that though. How would they feel if someone was beating the crap out of them and people were only watching? Good job on actually taking a stand!

It seems to me that we have now become a society who simply doesn't give a damn anymore. Personally, at my age, I probably wouldn't be able to intervene but would phone the Police instantly. However, in the past when I was younger and fitter, I have stepped into a situation to prevent a fight escalating, and being female it seemed to help. I couldn't do that now, of course, but it makes me so cross when people will pass by and not try to help.

I do not understand either. These other people - in that man's position - would have given anything for you to come and help them yet they pretend nothing is happening. It is a harsh world we live in and I would have done something to help the man. I am 60 years old, disabled, a woman and I would take responsibility for assisting him.

Hey I learned about this in Social Psychology last semester. So my answer may sound very textbook, but I do personally think it is the correct one. This is know as the "diffusion of responsibility". Every person thinks someone else has already said something, or is about to say something. I guess in this case it would be do something. People in today's soceity have a very MORBID curiosity. I personally would not get in the middle of it, but I would call a cop or something to that effect.

Although Im with you and could'nt watch one person get gang beaten I would have to jump in and help no matter what the out come might be but as for the 3,000 people thats ridiculios that not even one person would help. I can understand thou why some people would'nt help because now a days you never know what someone could do in the heat of the moment and I think thats why most people will not stop and help. There should be more people like you in the world but people like that are starting to become a rare thing but anyways cheers to you and for helping that guy out.

It is hard to say what I would do unless I was in the situation. At first I thought that I wouldn't have helped because I am a woman and there are 5 men however from what you described I think I would have tried to do something. My mother used to babysit children and she would beat them and shake them around bad. Once she was hitting a child so bad with a sandal that I stepped in to stop her from hurting the child more. I knew she would turn on me, though I was a kid the child was a baby (2) and I could handle the beating more than her. So I think I would have done something in order to help. Vicki

If I was with a group of people, I would definitely step in and try and do something. If I was by myself, being a small female, I wouldn't actually step into the fight, but I'd certainly call the police, and if I could, find some security guards or someone else to help until the police arrived.
It's a sad reflection of society when things like this happen. It's not unknown for people to be killed or raped in these situations, and no one does a thing to help. It's something that I'll never understand.

maybe i would call a police to break them up because i might be one of the victime of their fighting fists or little war coz im a girl. but anyhow if im a boy, i might still call the police to break them up so that i wont be the reason for them to say of favoritism.
