Have you noticed that you have a specific way of writing on the internet?

I do a couple of things that I noticed are a big habit with me. I actually try NOT to do them but my fingers and brain seem just do them! I find I put lol at the end of a lot of my discussions and even start a lot of responses with it. Another thing I do very often is instead of using a period or or comma I will just put ...! I'm certainly a creature of habit when it comes to writing on the internet.
Do you have things you do when you write a discussion, response or anything on the internet? Do they carry over into your actual writing on paper? Do you do it naturally or do you think about it before you do it?

Hi.
I have never noticed it myself but some of my friends just come to know that I have drafted the material even if they have not seen me typing it or writting it. They say that there is something about my style that tells them that I have done this or that.

Yup...sometimes it's more obvious to people who are reading our writing than it is to us.

Yes, it happens with me too.
I also use the "..." and often develop my own style when it comes to grammar and emoticons.
I have it worse though. I kind of shift to a different personality when i enter chatrooms. Heheheh.

I never use chat rooms but I'm sure if I did I would be a lot different than I normally am.

My mode of writing/typing is always the same, and it's actually pretty consistent with the way I think. This seems to surprise some, and I can only respond in kind...
Actually, I find writing/typing easier for me to communicate my thoughts, than just talking.

Writing on paper???? LOL I can't remember the last time I did that :) As you can already see I use the LOL also :) oh and ':)' smile faces. I also tend to end sentences with '...' it's my way of saying my thought hasn't ended but the sentence has...

I think my problem is I have not only the worst handwritting in the world but my mind runs on over-drive all the time so thoughts are running faster than my hand. When typing I can actually read what I've written, thank the Lord for 'spell check', and I am blessed to type 90 words a minute so can type faster than I write :)

You are so right. Recently I have written a few things on paper and actually had to stop and think about what I was writing leaving out the ..., lol and :) What an awful habit I've gotten into.

I feel that on the internet there are times where (lol) is necessary to convey a certain emotion or idea, simply because it's difficult at times to get your message across without sounding sarcastic or mean. And I tend to use .... as well. I don't do it in "real world" messages, thank goodness. Certainly a business email looks a lot different than a personal email between friends. I think as long as people know the difference about the appropriate times to use it, then it's fine.

Exactly! It's very hard to convey humor online, because people don't know you or what you're like. I've had people start fights with me because they read something that I wrote and got the wrong impression. So emoticons and such do have a place on the internet.

Oh yes, it's definately ok to use on the internet but not in the "real world" in business messages. That's exactly how I feel...sometimes I don't think I will be taken the right way and have to add lol so the readers will know I find something funny.

LOL I do that too! I don't carry that over to my regular writing or talk that way, but it was funny one day my daughter said OMG! I said excuse me. I didn't like her talking to me like that. Then I saw this commercial about text messaging and the mom was talking to the kids, father and grandmother and they were all using the text messaging words to talk. Though I do use it online I am not that bad yet. It would drive me bonkers. LOL

I love that commercial and didn't know half of what they were saying. I would go crazy to if I had to listen to that all the time. It would take me forever to figure out what someone was saying.

I wopuild say that I do add a signature of sorts at the end of mostly all my discussions, responses, and or comments. Not in real life though. This signature has become my "handle" so to speak. It's just a force of habit to add it now.

Maybe because I don't know or understand those little codes, I don't use them. I try to write the same way I speak, with proper English. well at least as proper as I can manage it.

I have found that writing on the internet is more open to expression that actual writing in our everyday lives. I do sometimes use the smiley face symbols or lol, when I wouldn't ordinarily do so. As for being creatures of habit-we pretty much all are, lol. I have grown to enjoy the informality of chatting on the internet more than I thought I would.

I find myself putting LOL a lot when I'm chatting only because the other person can't hear my tone of voice or see my expression so they never know when I'm joking. And a lot of the people I've talked to are really sensitive and defensive about things I wouldn't even think could possibly be insulting to anyone. So I tend to put LOL a lot just to keep the mood light so they realize I'm joking. I guess it's a little like laughing at your own joke, which makes it seem really cheesy. Oh well.
