which do you recommend, self-study or pay a tutor? i have tried doing self-study once but it didn't do much help. i was able to know some things though but just pretty much the basic things only.

for me, self-study only works if you are really determined, if you have the will power to do it.. but if i were to choose between self-study or tutor, i will choose to pay a tutor in order to learn japanese.. it is the japanese language is so vast and have many variations.. according to my physic's teacher who studied in japan, the japanese language varies fom different areas.. so the tutor can help you in understanding complex statements and also the tutor have the experience of conversing with a ntive speaker so they are adept in the langauge... right now, i also doing slef-study because i dont have much time for a tutor.. and its kinda hard since no one can supervise me... yeah, like the basic things too..
but if you pursue the self-study, just make sure that you'll find a time everyday where you can learn new words.. like me, when im on my way to home, sometimes i read some books that can help my study.. and also, watching anime (japanese with english subs), japanese dramas and listening to japanese music can help you learn new words.. and at the same time you are enjoying yourself...

self study is always good but if when u find some difficulty then u can take helpf from ur teacher or tutor. self study makes the student confident and independent.

i think for me it's the self-study, because if you only study with yourself, you can concentrate more. you can study with the use of internet just by yourself without spending money for a tutor.

self-study will help... to supplement an interactive learning.
more interaction, more learning... for these types of subject, that is.

I think self study can only get you a bit more acquainted with the language rather than really learn how to speak and read it. It's still better to have a tutor. I know because i've been trying to tutor myself into learning Japanese but it just isn't enough. =)

A tutor can offer a different perspective on things for you. Two heads are always better than one so I say go with a tutor.
