The few people I've known have had major problems afterwards. Do you know about any problems?

My mother-in-law had gastric bypass about fifteen years ago. Then after gaining back the weight she had the surgery again. She gained the weight back again. This is the complication that most poeple complain of..but the new surgery is called lap-banding. The wonderful thing about this is that it is less invasive and a shorter recovery time. It is also adjustable and removable if complications from the procedure arise.

Has your mother-in-law ever experienced severe stomach pains? Did she not change her eating habits to gain the weight back? thank you for sharing.

She just very slowly stretched her stomach out a little at time. She also drank a lot of carbonated beverages...don't know if that caused additional complications. Good luck finding info.

I had it May 11th and have had no problems at all. Go to www.obesityhelp.com for more info. I love my new life. The surgery is just a tool, you have to learn to eat completely different and exercise. I have lost 85 pounds and have never felt better. I still want to lose 60 more pounds but will still be happy if I don't. Most surgeons tell you that the surgery alone willhelp you lose at least 70% of the excess weight, the rest is up to you. I ahve had no complications at all!

The side effects are from not following doctor's orders. I know several people that have had it done, two of them had it done over 1 1/2 years ago. None of them have had one problem. This is a tool and it is meant to guide a person and help with weight loss. But there are also guidelines to follow.

There is a new kind of gastric bipass. I can't recall the name but it is with using some kind of a band. I wish I had more info sorry.

It has been quite some time since I last responded to this discussion. So I thought I would update. I had gastric bypass May 11, 2006. I have lost 145 pounds and have been at my goal weight for quite some time. I have had NO complications at all from the surgery. I think if a person does what the doctor asks them to do afterwards and changes their eating habits, they can be successful with the surgery.

I know someone who had the surgery about a year or so ago and she has lost a LOT of weight with it. She had some problems in the beginning and sometimes gets headaches now and then, but now she's basically fine. At first, she had to be strict on her eating and couldn't eat certain foods at the same time. But, she says that she doesn't have to do that anymore. I didn't realize how heavy she was until she told me how she had lost over 200 pounds a long while back and she still had a lot of weight to go (I would say at least another 100 pounds). Wow! The only thing that I've really noticed that I didn't like was that she really hasn't changed her eating habits all that much. She does eat more healthy food so that she can get her nutrition requirements, but she still eats a lot of high sugar, high fat foods and that can still have an impact on her health.
