The first thing you need to do is get involved, read the guidelines, keep reading them so you understand them. Reading the guidelines is probably the most important thing you can do.
Add some interests to your profile...there are many to choose from.
Make some friends...if someone says something that appeals to you or you agree with wholeheartedly, add them as a friend. Read lots of posts and get involved in discussions. This will give you a feel for things.

Make sure to read the guidelines
http://www.mylot.com/o/topguidelines.aspx
Also read the FAQ
http://www.mylot.com/o/faq.aspx
And the terms of service

Conductwise
- Don't swear (too much) some words are banned as is using too many non alphanumeric characters.
- Do not harass other members
- Do not insult other members
Establishing yourself
- Take the time to respond to other peoples threads. You should try to get your name out there and establish yourself in the mylot community.
- Start discussions when you have a good friendbase and if you have a good topic for discussing. Most times new users will not get responses due to lack of exposure.
- A good rule of thumb is to try making your discussions after replying to a good number of other discussions about 100 or 200, maybe more. (I did 500).
- Try to get some Best Responses too. That means you must have the best post according to the thread starter, and you'll usually get that by a) knowing what you are talking about and b) submitting a well thought of post.
Getting more out of mylot
- Be sure to post as many interests as you can. Also look at other established members and their interests to get a feel for what topics are popular.
- When you get established try to start at least 3 threads a day if possible. If you are not one to start topics, try posting a discussion each week. Discussions are eternal and there is no rule against responding to old discussions.
- Reply as much as you can but make it at least decent. Its usually a 3 line rule but you can get more per post if you make much better responses. Remember though, not all threads will require a 10 paragraph response so just post what you can.
- Be sure to stay active. If you inactive you won't earn from the posting side. You'll still get money from responses to your threads, but its better to post to max out your earning potential.

Like someone else said, read the guidelines. When you respond to someone else's posts, try to make your response somewhat long...even if it's just a few lines. Don't do the one worded responses such as yes, no, etc. You get the picture. And if you disagree with someone's opinion, feel free to say so, but do it in a nice way. Don't be super rude about it, otherwise people will give you a negative rating and you won't be looked upon very well. It's not hard to be successful here. The most important thing is to have fun! Good luck and welcome to mylot!
