Simple White Bread
3 cups all purpose flour
1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
2 tablespoons shortening
1 1/4 cups warm water 110 F(~45 C)
1/4 cup of dry milk
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons of butter, melted
1 tablespoon butter, melted
Mix together shortening, sugar, salt, butter, milk, yeast, and about 1-1 1/4 cups flour. Add warm water and beat by hand for 3 minutes. Add the remaining flour to the mixture and continue beating. Be sure to scrape the bowl so the dough can stay in the mixture. Mix all ingredients together until smooth mixture forms.
Put dough on a floured surface and knead until it is smooth and elastic. This will take 5 to 8 minutes. Put in a greased bowl and turn over once to grease both sides. Cover with a clean cloth or loose plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in volume. About 30 mins to an hour.
Preheat oven to 375 F (~190 C).
Punch the dough down and shape into a loaf. Place on a greased 9 X 5 x 3 inch loaf pan. Grease the top of the loaf, and cover. Let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Bake loaf for roughly 35-45 minutes or until golden brown. Place on a wire rack to cool. Brush the top of the loaf with melted butter.
