When I lived with my grandmother she often made her own brad and it was so good. She would shape it into loave or biscuits before baking. When it would come out of the oven She would let it set long enough to beable to slice the loaves and the biscuits cool enought to handle. They had their own cows and Grandma would churn her own butter and we would put enough on the biscuits to be dripping as we ate them. There was nothering better for supper unless it was her home mad chicken and dumplings. I used to make my own bread too until my hand got crippled with arthritse. Do you ever make your own bread? Punching the dough can be a good stress releiver as well as taste good.

You'ce just got me craving some of my wifes der-Duchman ( or whatever its called or spelled ) bread. She dosen't make it very often & it usually makes a disaster of the house but its awsome. She always makes enough to feed an army & we have to give lots away ( nobody ever complains ) & can't seem to make a small batch. I must say she's become an incredible cook.

I always have flour all over the house when I make bread. Can't seem to confine it to one place. That bread sounds like it would be wonderful. I have made sourdough bread too and that is great bread. The starter was over 100 years old when I got it and it came from germany. whish I still had some of the starter. It made great pancakes too.

I used to make bread! - bread making
I haven't made my own bread in years and used to love it. Just the aroma of it baking is something I never forget. Now people have those machines but I woulnd't bother with that. By hand is the best way.

Your right that the aroma is unforgetable. Hand kneading is the best way but I'm thinking about getting one of those machines because my hands won't handle the kneading any more.

I have made my own bread homemade before, its the best. Now I have a machine and its still real good, now its so much easier. The machine does all the work, the bread is still homemade and fresh, just much easier. You can even buy the special mixes just for bread machines, that saves lots of time. The mixes can get expensive, I try to find them on sale.

I used to make my own bread, but have not done any bread making for a while. I have a whole wheat bread recipe, but it requires butter and it is quite expensive and I do not like to use margarine. I use my Kitchenaid to mix it, but since there is now just two of us, and I am the only one who eat it, I have not made it for a while. The same with buns. There is no point making them when if I eat too many, I gain too much weight.

I saw that the price of wheat is going up and will hit our food soon. My granddaughter works for a chain grocery store bakey and she told me that all their products have gone up $.20. So I'm considering doing more of my own baking.

Hello deebomb. I have never made my own bread as I am not a good chef in the kitchen though I could cook some dishes. It is so nice that your grandmother loves to make bread for you to eat.

Hello william. Baking bread is really very easy. It does take time and some muscle. You can make it with just whole wheat flour, a little shorting or oil, sugar yeast and water. There are more complicated redipes out there but I'm not sure that they are any better than the simple way. The water has to be just warmer then your wrist and the yeast desolved in it along with the sugar. The yeast is fed by the sugar. If the water is too hot the yeast is killed if too cold will not activate. The shorting ot oil isto help the bread tobrown nicely. then you just add flour intil you have a nice stiff dough. Then you knead the dough until it is nice and smooth and shinny. Let it raise in a warm place then when it is doubled you knead it down again and put in pans to bake at 375 degrees until it is nicely browned. This is the easisest and best slice and slather with butter and eat.

I agree with you when you make your own you know what is in it. The store bought bread has to many additives and One doesn't always know what they are.

Hey deebomb, Yes, I make my own bread. And love it! So much flavor, so much therapy. I discovered baking my own bread after a long spiritual process. It has become a weekly joy of mine, along with making my own butter. I don't have my own cows, and it's still not as good as the real old fashioned churned butter, but better than the stuff you buy at the store. And chicken and dumplin's? Well, love it! Although I limit it. Home made stock, home made soup, usually everything by hand. No bread making machine either. All by hand. The kneading is the best part - well - next to the taste.
