Why is it so hard to get rid of stuff?

My house has become cluttered. Half of my stuff (as I call it) is still in boxes..So, why am I keeping it?.....
I have things in the basement that I know if anyone stole any of it, I wouldn't miss it.....LOL.....
My office becomes the hide-away place for everything..Now it looks like a torado went through it....
I have a mind to just get a huge dumpster and throw it all away....but I won't.....LOL.....
What do you do when your stuff takes over?

i have an idea that i am a very sentimental person.. aw really, i am! LOL
i just cant seem to throw some old stuff. there are just to many memories attached with it. and i cant throw memories away, whether its sad or happy memories. when i sort my things out, like cleaning up, and i see these things, i remember things from the past and it just give me a smile, whether it be a stupid thing i have done, or a sad thing that happened to me, or a very happy memory with friends, everything. ^__^
but there are really times when i finally decide to throw some things out. those are the things that are really worn out from being stored, like the candy wrappers where my niece used to buy and she'd give the wrapper to me because she knows that the anime figure printed on it is my favorite. LOL i wasnt able to check it for a long time and when i finally did, there were a lot of ants and they have made the box as their house. ^__^;;

well, maybe segregation and donation might help in your case. i once had a pile or so of old things and i made a bit of organization - segregate things and store them accordingly. some old stuffs like old shirts, shoes and the like were given to needy neighbors and some are relatives. some of them were donated to a bazaar sale in our locality. good luck to you.

I am so glad to find some others out there who do the same thing I do. I don't know why I hang on to some of this stuff. I was raised with the theory "Waste Not Want Not" so I guess I feel wasteful if I through it out. Even though my mother has passed on I get the feeling if I through out anything of value she would come back and haunt me. I guess in the end I will just leave it for my sons to deal with. At least that way they will be thinking about me for a little while LOL.

I dont keep stuff around anymore. My husband would always keep things that were so stupid. So one day I just threw all of it out. Oh well because now I say to him you better put this somewhere out of my sight or Im throwing it out!LOL Gotta do it.

It is usually overwhelming and quite depressing. I have always tended to be a pack rat, and now, I'm wanting to get rid of everything and simplify my life! Just not sure where to start! Hubby is just as bad. I think if we haven't used something in a couple of years...who needs it? Time to call the good will people.

Get rid of it or ask any friends if they want some of it. I have a bit of stuff I have to get rid of or give away too. I don't like clutter and when it starts to take over I have to do someting about it.

I watch a lot of cleaning shows and such. they always say that the reason people hold on to things are usually one of two reasons.
reason 1/ the object holds memories for you. except the thing is it's not that the thing that holds the memory, you do.
Reason 2/ you just get so overwhelmed by the clutter you don't know where to start.
It sounds like you might be suffering from reason 2.
When stuff takes over, I clean.
Cause I hate clutter more than cleaning.

I de-clutter contantly. I grew up with two packrat parents, so I think my decluttering is in response to that! I "try" to get everything picked up each day, and make sure I put things back in there original places. Doesn't always happen, but I try. And, I have a closet, taht I strictly put stuff in to donate/get rid of. once or month or so, I take the bag (s) to the second hand store. My problem is kids stuff (out of season, toys, etc). I have 4 kids and we're having a few more, so I store the out of size clothes, etc for the next child. It makes sense, but it drives me a little crazy keeping stuff, that I'm not currently using.
