I love cooking but was fortunate enough to not havebeen introduced to cooking with msg or monosodium glutamate. How about you? Can you cook with or without this seasoning? For me, one can do without it, especially if you can use a variety of spices to liven up your dishes...it's healthier and better for the body in the long run...

Hello, Raenie! I definitely agree with you - we can come up with great tasting meals even if do not use MSG. As a registered nurse and a mom, I know that a dish should be both apetizing and healthy. It has been cited before that MSG is a carcinogen. This is enough reason why we should avoid this substance. Avoiding food additives with MSG such as ready-mixes and flavorings is also a healthy way to prepare meals. We can use different herbs and spices to bring out the best in every meal.

Hello as well, dhels25 =) your kids sure are lucky! and it is such a scary thought that there are so many ingredients out there that are carcinogens as well and an awareness of such products is really key so we can avoid them. And I also do think that using different herbs & spices lets you to be creative as well with the dishes, and not just dependent on some food additive or flavor enhancer...=)

I grew using it, but later on decided to avoid it whenever possible after learning the hazard it causes. Now I cook mostly using natural ingredients, sometimes I also cook using those seasonings and flavorings but that often. I have learned that too much of these things are not really healthy, so I use them with a little fraction if ever I'd be needing it..

Good for you for being aware of the negative effects of msg, raijn =)! I do agree with you that we should do our best in minimizing the use of ingredients that can be bad for us in the long run, especially since we already get our fair share of these chemicals in our bodies especially in eating processed foods...you have a healthy day =)

Msg imparts a distinct taste to the dish it is used in. we love it in our Chinese preparations and without msg the Chinese dishes just don’t taste authentic enough. Though harmful, we cant do without it either. But since we don’t have Chinese cuisine regularly, its OK with us once in a while.

I do agree with you sudipta--chinese food does have that certain taste & I guess that as long as one doesn't use it too often, it will at least lessen one's health risk.

I'm allergic to msg so I avoid any foods with it as an ingredient. At Asian restaurants I always have to remember to ask for no msg. I've forgotten a couple times and then had bad reactions.

I do agree with you brimia that most Asian restaurants use msg; One time my family and I ate at this restaurant that specializes in a special kind of soup here in Philippines--batchoy, & after eating it--hoo boy--the splitting headache that I suffered because of it! That's why it's really a treat if a restaurant is proud to say that they don't use msg--the same goes for chips & other junkfoods! Btw, just a tip-- I read somewhere that some people with food allergies bring like a food allergy card and hand it to their server so that they won't forget to omit that particular ingredient that can serve as an allergen...hope this helps! Enjoy you rday! =)

Nope i don't cook using MSG. My family do not cook using msg but the food is simply delicious and very tasty. And msg is so bad for people so we had tried using it a few times only but never occasionally. There are already a lot of msg in other (processed) food products we eat so why should we cook our own food with msg right? I believe msg was created to fake the flavoring of certain food when other people didn't know how to produce really tasty dishes themselves. Up to now i think people who use msg when cooking is actually a for of "cheating" on their part because they have to use MSG in order to make the food they cook taste delicious. Haha. =)

I totally agree with you that food can be absolutely delicious without msg---have you experienced getting a headache after eating out?? That's actually my experience when I eat out sometimes & then the food has a lot of msg--& maybe my body's not used to it & i get a headache as a reaction to too much msg...so it must be really bad for one's health...here's to a healthy 2008!! =)

Well maybe you've got to cut down on junk food or eating out for a while and eat more fruits and vegetables just to be more healthier and not get headaches when you eat out again. =)

I used to use MSD, albeit unknowingly. My son became quite an authority on healthy eating and wouldn't eat a lot of my recipes for awhile. Rather than be insulted, I checked out what he was all about. Now, I don't used any additives or preservatives, corn syryp, etc. if I can help it. I think soup is a little more bland without the good old chicken stock laced msg, but other than that, I'm doing okay. Oh, other names for MSG - oops I'm not yet allowed to cut and paste here. but needless to say, there are a lot of other labels that mean msg.

In our case, it's the other way aroung--my mom's the one who introduced us to healthy eating-and it's actually really great once you eat healthy, especially since there are healthier alternatives that are really better for your body.=) In our country, msg is also called vetsin ;) Enjoy your day!

No, Not anymore. Before , I really like to use it when I cooked, but already few years I decided not to use that thing anymore, and only use fresh ingredients, and some powder if I could not find the fresh one.

I think that everyone is entitled to their opinion some people may be wary of using msg, especially if they know the side effects that it can bring, some may not be. And like with everything else, I do think that moderation is key. happy cooking to you =)!

Sometimes i don't put any msg in what i cook, i just season it with a little sugar to make it sweet and peppers to spice up a bit. Lots of msg is bad to our health.
