How do you get the tangy zip in potato salad? Everytime I make it it tasts good but can't figure out what that ingrediant is? Relish? Vinegar? Anyone know? And what is with putting eggs in your potato salad?

I use miracle whip with pickle juice. It's a favorite at all the bbqs...I have to make extra so people can take it home, lol!

So what do you do with the pickle juice? Mix it with the Mayo? I'm not a big fan of pickles but if it give it kicks it up a notch why not.

I don't like eggs in my potato salad. I like the old standbys...mayo, mustard, a little celery and onion.

I like your combo minus the celery.

From reading through these responses, it seems we make our potato salad slightly differently in England. From what I know, it sounds as if the extra "zing" you're talking about comes from the addition of Chives, Parsley, Black Pepper and freshly squeezed Lemon Juice. Could that be it? Here's the ingredients, I use: Potatoes (boiled), Mayonnaise, Creme Fraiche, Chopped Chives, Chopped Parsley, Lemon Juice and ground Black Pepper and Salt to taste. If I don't have lemon juice in, I use salad cream to replace the mayonnaise, as this has its own "zing". Brightest Blessings.

I don't think mine has a lot of "tang" or "zest" but, I do put pickles in mine and I put a bit of mustard along with the mayo. I guess if I wanted to add to the tanginess I would add to the amount of pickles and mustard that I use. I think some people use relish instead of pickles. Relish is just chopped up pickles isn't it?

I use mustard...mixed with the mayo...and the eggs..a little milk and just a pinch of sugar to off set the tartness of the mustard.

This is new to me. Milk, sugar and mustard. By itself is sounds like a gross combo. But I guess it works with potatos

I think there are several versions of classic potato salad. My grandmother makes the best (in my opinion, of course!) and she uses a bit of vinegar and not very much mayonnaise. She also puts crumbled bacon in as well, and bacon makes everything better. ;)

ummm bacon. That is a good thought. I've never thought of putting bacon in it. Thanks for the idea.

I can't eat potato salad anymore but I use to make it when we had dinners where everyone brought a special dish. For some reason I was always asked to bring the potato salad and deviled eggs. I used Boiled potatoes Celery boiled eggs(chopped) onion green pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper Sweet pickle relish Olives(sliced) Mayonnaise mustard Salt And for a surprise taste I put in a small amount of chopped apples I made this so often I did not measure anything so I can't tell you how much to use. I guess you will have to do a taste test after each ingredient is added.

The zing you are looking for comes from using both a little vinegar and sugar. I also use miracle whip and a little mustard as well as a little salt. You have to start out slow with blending in the ingredients. Put a little of everything and then taste. If it is to sweet add a little vinegar, if to sour add a little sugar. Keep mixing and tasting until you get the combination you like. But remember just a little at a time. As my mom use to say, you can always add more but if you use to much you can't take it out. After making it a few times you will get the hang of it and pretty soon you well know about how much of each thing to use next time. Go easy on the mustard because a litte goes a long way. I also add a little finely chopped onion and some pickle relish. Use as much Miracle Whip as you need to get the right consistency. Added tip- I always make mine the day before I want to serve it. This gives all of the ingredients a chance to blend and the Miracle whip will set up some.Besides potato salad is best well chilled.
