WARNING: There is talk about serious injury below. Somewhat Graphic.

Jolie (our mutt dog) went out yesterday around noon and did not come back at all yesterday. This afternoon I found her hiding in the doghouse out back. I went out to try to get her to come back inside, but she would not move. I finally got her out after about 15 minutes. There was blood everywhere. I got her into her room (concrete with a drain) to try to check her out, but she hid and would not let me. Her legs were covered in blood and so was her stomach. I got her into the vet for a 2:45 appointment. I had to loosely tie a rag around her belly to keep her from bleeding everywhere.
The vet thinks she got hit by a car. Her legs are all scrapped up, and her stomach is ripped. They are keeping her overnight and are going to try to sew her stomach up as best they can. I have no idea how long she had been hurt, but it had been 24 hours since I had last seen her. She lost a lot of blood from the time I found her to the time she got to the vet, so who knows how much she had bled out.
Positive thoughts for Jolie please.

The vet called. They sewed her up and put a drainage tube in her stomach. She can come home later today with some meds and she has to go back in about 10 days. She was definately hit by a car. They took x-rays and she has no broken bones. She is a 75 pound dog so I guess she can take a beating better than a smaller dog. Poor thing is probably scared out of her mind at the vets.

I'm so sorry hun. It's terrible when an animal is hurt, because they can't let us know just how much it hurts or if they want cuddles or to just be left alone.
My thoughts are with you and your pup.

Poor Baby!! I hope the vet can fix her for you and that it dosent cost a fortune. I will say a prayer for her. If he did get hit I hope the person is feeling really guilty about it now!! They should have stoped and checked on the dog. Stupid people.

Oh lily I'm so sorry!! I've read that she's home now but I'm praying she's feeling some what better. Bless her sweet heart! And damn the person who hit her and left her there!! Damn those unfeeling jerks!! I could never ever do that. I hit a dog one time even swerving to miss it and still tapped it and I stopped and screamed for help and the dog went into the woods seemingly unharmed but still I didn't know for sure so finally a neighbor came outside and I told him what had happened and he said the dog lived over there and that it's blind. Oh gosh my heart felt like it was being stepped on! So I went over to find the dog and did find it but it was ok. I left my number on the door telling them what happened but they never called me back so I guess it was ok. But gosh I felt terrible!
I'll say a prayer for your dear Jolie. God love her!

I had a male cocker spaniel in which I had neutered and he had to wear a collar like that but I was able to take it off during feeding time. Can't you take it off? I mean, it would be for just a few minutes so she could eat. Poor gal!

I am so sorry! I do hope she is okay.
Please make this your motivation to solve the issue on how your dog could have wandered out into the street. if she wanders because she is not spayed, spay her. If she wanders because she is outside too long alone unsupervised, keep her in unless someone is out there interacting with her - or fence an area of the yard. Or if it is fenced and she is escaping, bury some fence or a barrier a few feet under the fence so she cannot dig out (or at least you could catch her before she dug too far).
I am not trying to be mean at all, just helpful. Things do happen beyond out control but our dogs rely on us to be their protectors. I know it is a different way of thinking if its not really a big thing to you to let your dog go and come as she pleases, but she will thank you for it by living for a long, long time because she is out of harm's way.

She has been spayed. That is not the issue. We live in the country on a 36 acre property and on a road with only 4 other houses within a mile. She and the other dogs are out running around all day. There is very little traffic on the road. It has never been an issue with any of our 3 dogs, 2 cats, 3 peacocks, and one guinea hen.

I live with very few houses too...could you convince the jurisdiction to install a speedbump or signs to watch for animals so people slow down? Of maybe just put a fence along the road part and leave the rest of your property open. People just whiz down roads they think are uninhabited. Our neighbor's little dog got killed that way - she was actually standing on the shoulder, not out in the street.

Maybe train them to not go near the road (the dogs anyhow). Or maybe your locality can be convinced to install a speed bump or a sign to watch for animals. Our neighbor's dog got killed because people think no houses=safe to drive like a nut and she wasn't even out in the middle of the road - she was on the shoulder with her feet technically on the grass.
