Parallel Parking

I thought of this while listening to David Letterman tonight. Can you parallel park? As in a tight spot between two cars alongside a busy city street? I had to do it when I took my driver's test in 1968 but I haven't had to do it very often in recent years. I can if I have to but I don't like it!

I can do it but I'll admit I don't exactly like it either. I did it more when I was working for a denser urban area. Lots of parallel parking, at least to avoid the overpriced garages. I was able to do the parallel parking at least one sixth of my total time working there (3 years). Most other times, I got in early so I didn't have to deal with it.
And Annie, the test is a bit different nowadays. Instead of cars its just cones or poles and one has to pull in and then reverse back through them. Its also more of an empty part of the test since current stateside patterns are heavy into ultramax sea of concrete parking lots.

I know the test is WAY different today...lol! When I took it I drove around a couple blocks in my hometown and there was a special parking spot marked off that was used for the parking portion of the test. I practiced that over and over again until I got it! These days I don't do much business in "downtown" areas so I don't have to do it much.

NO problems with me.. But the space shud be enough for my car to fit in.. I have been driving for 4 years now, I know all the traits of it.. I have done parallel parking twice. Though there was space otherwise, still I tried to inject my car into that slot.. I was trying to examine myself.. And I succeeded in both the cases...

Yes, I can parallel park, but, I don't have to do it very often. I saw that Letterman episode, and that was a really tight spot they had to get into. I'm not sure I could have got into that one.

I had to do it when I first learned to drive. I drove my instructor crazy. He made sure the cars were parked so that there was but an inch between my car and the others. Actually it was the driver instructor car and it was probably heavily insured. (With me, they had to be.) I passed after two attempts, that is two attempts at the drivers test and that cost me a lot of money. That was way back when stenos and secretaries made $200 a month and with lessons costing between 10 and 20 dollars each, it took a lot of my savings. I doubt if I could do it now, now that I do not have my license and I do not have enough money to buy a new car let alone lessons.
