Any form of yoga or meditation must be learned under the expert guidance of a Guru. It's always dangerous to try any form of these practices all by yourself. It is always advisable to join some classes under a master. For eg. there was a gentleman called Sri Gopikrishna from Kashmir. He practiced kundalini yoga by himself and as he awakened it, it entered the wrong nadi once and he had a tough time bringing it down again. He suffered for 3 years and then again when he brought it down, he tried again and it entered another wrong nadi and suffered again for another few years. So finally, he went and met a yogi and asked him for help. So the yogi consented to help him and somehow helped bring his kundalini back to normal and this time, it worked all fine. In the human body, there are three main nadis around the spine. They are known as psychic passages.
Those are Ida which is connected with the left nostril and pingala with the right nostril. The nadi in the center is called the Sushumna which rises from the base of the spine to the cerebrum. The ida and pingala move up around the sushumna in an entwined design. Ida is associated with the para-sympathetic nervous system and Pingala is associated with the sympathetic.
So for Mr. GopiKrishna once, the Kundalini enterd the Ida and the second time it entered Pingala. And both times it created a lot of complications and trouble. He could have gone insane as well and ended up in an asylum but was very lucky he didn't. So the Kundalini has to properly rise in Sushumna straight up. For that, the psychic passage has to be cleared by proper yogic practices. So it's better to do it under the guidance of a master who would advice you and help you as understand the various psychic experiences that you would be experiencing during the practice. Well, especially, the kundalini awakening is kind of risky and it has to be done under expert guidance. A lot of people go through various reactions during that peroid. Some people feel very withdrawn and wouldn't talk to anybody. They would stay in seclusion for a long period of time. Some people hear loud beating of drums, bagpipes, and even sometimes sounds of explosion in their sleep at nights. So experiences keep varying. Some people don't feel hungry for days together, and if they feel hungry they would eat a lot. These are the various experiences a person goes through depending on the intensity of the awakening.

So, what you say is right. Usually people who don't want to risk teaching the spiritual aspect of it, would just give a brief introduction to it, rather than take you deeper.

Wow, that is really scarey! I would guess that the type of yoga that is available at the YMCA and in yoga videos are more for the exercise aspect and not the spiritual aspect, because of the reasons that you cite. Do you have any insight to that?

I took Kundalini Yoga when I was pregnant (modified, of course, for pregnancy). I really enjoyed it and felt it was safe. I'm curious- what have you heard about it that was negative?

Some people report seeing visions, hearing strange sound, suffer severe pain...etc. Some feel like they are insane and need to see doctor.

Couldn't this happen with any type of yoga/ meditation, though? Is there something specific about the Kundalini that increases these chances? I am facinated about yoga, and I am learning that there is so much more to it than the classes I used to go to at the YMCA and the videos I now do at home.
