Cold water after meal?

Philippines

A friend sent me this information about drinking cold water after every meal. It is really nice to drink cold water after meal, but it is said that cold water will solidify the oily parts of the food that we have just consumed. In effect it will slow down digestion. And once this sludge reacts with the acid, it will break down and will be absorbed by the intestine faster than solid food. This then will line the instestine and very soon will turn into fats that will lead to cancer. So maybe that's why the Chinese or Japanese drink hot tea with their meals...not cold water? Why don't we adopt their habit while eating. We have nothing to lose. What can you say, is there thruth to this?...

I have heard about this info and i also received such kind of emails in the net. I don't know if this is true but you will lose nothing if you follow the advice. I am a lover of chilled water and i admit i do drink cold water after milk. Sometimes i even have a fruit juice with ice cubes in it. I just try to limit my cold water intake nowadays and drink more of lukewarm water.. i agree that we still also have do more researches in order to really know what the truth about drinking cold water is. I hope there will be more scientific studies about this so that people will really be get informed of the real effects of drinking cold water during and after meals..

Yea, I too believe we have nothing to lose when we follow the advice and whether this has or no scientific basis at all. What is not good is when we do not drink water at all. Thanks....

i am a fan of cold water... i always drink cold water since i am a child whether when i am having a meal or not... i've been told million times by elders (my parents, aunts, uncles, etc) that it won't be good for my health... but i just can't help it... i think it is kind of addictive... but i am trying to lessen it now...

This claim is false. This is an example of an email rumor being circulated since last year, Feb. 2006. This is what the site about.com:urban legend and folklore has to say about this email rumor. link - http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_drinking_cold_water.htm "Rule of thumb: don't take health advice from anonymous forwarded emails. There's no scientific basis for the claim that cold water will "solidify the oily stuff" you have just consumed, or that this "sludge" will "line the intestine," let alone "turn into fats" and "lead to cancer." It's mumbo-jumbo, and self-contradictory mumbo-jumbo at that. The email states that drinking cold water "slows down the digestion," yet in the very next sentence declares that it will cause the your stomach contents to "break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster." Which is it? What studies do exist mainly extoll the benefits of drinking cold water, especially during and after vigorous exercise. Cold water is absorbed by the body more quickly than warm water and can help lower one's body temperature, preventing dehydration. Further, our bodies do not expend calories when absorbing cold water. In order for water to hydrate the body, it need not be at room temperature, or even at the same temperature as our bodies'. As a matter of fact, the American College of Sports Medicine's Position Stand on Exercise and Fluid Replacement states that fluid needs to be cooler than ambient temperature, meaning between 59 – 72°F. Colder fluids leave the stomach more quickly than warmer ones, allowing faster rehydration. During hot weather, when we tend to lose extra fluids, beverages in this temperature range will have a cooling effect on the body. Drinking cool beverages can help to cool us from the inside. Also, there's no need to worry: cold foods and beverages do not harm any of our internal organs, so we can feel free to enjoy them. This is a very good information to discuss. But for me there's nothing wrong with receiving or even following health advices from anonymous people. It just depend on one's judgement whether to heed or not such advice. As I've said, I'm not a cold water drinker myself, not because I have this info but because I get sore throat easily drinking cold water or any cold liquid. Whether we drink cold or hot water after meal, one thing I'm sure is that water is necessary for our body and our health. Anyway, thanks for this very informative response. Smile

I don't know about the biological aspects of this, but it seems like it would make sense. I know from a weight loss standpoint they say to drink a glass of water before eating. That's supposed to fill you up, but to also help digestion. I also read that cold water slows down the metabolism, so I would bet that it also slows down digestion. I makes sense to me! I don't know if hot tea would make a difference, though. I think as long as the drink is room temperature it would probably work the same.

I heard about that before. My friend told me that if I drink cold water after eating, it will be more difficult for my stomach to digest the food I ate. I advise that you drink tea or coffee after eating

This sounds like a job for MythBusters. Perhaps there is some validity to the claim. Either way, why not try a little hot soup or hot tea. sounds good to me.

Naturopathy says you should not drink water after meals. It increases gastritis. There should be a gap of at least 45 minutes to an hour. :)

I also observed the Japanese and Chinese people are served with hot soup after a meal. We also do that now, or sometimes when i have a lunch when there is no soup, i have a cup of coffee. I really agree that cold water may solidify oily parts of the food we intake that is why i don't practice drinking cold water while having a meal.

Even without knowing this information, I'm not a cold water drinker myself. I don't know why? Maybe because I got sore throat easily. But I don't know if the chinese of japanese know about this, the reason why they don't drink cold water in their meals too, or is this just their custom to drink tea or hot soup.

There is slight defference in what your friend informed you. It is not cold water, but ordinary water after every meal is good for health. It helps in digestion, helps in ditoxification of toxic elements and helps in absorption. Hotwater is still better. I donot know much about drinking hot tea with meals and to what extent that will help, but I am sure of ordinary or hot water will help and definitely will not harm you.

This is very good information, i have heard some one say not to drink cold water after meal but i never knew why. I always drink cold water after meal as i have adopted that habit since childhood, from today i'll try to change my habit. This is very good reason but i wonder did the Chinese and Japanese knew this from the early times?. Anyway thanks for the information and keep on posting such educational types.
