National Novel Writing Month 2007

United States
October 30, 2007 9:53am CST
Hi Everyone, Is anybody else going to participate in NaNoWriMo 2007? If so, what are you doing to prepare yourself before the writing race starts on Thursday? For those of you who have no idea what National Novel Writing Month is....basically every November, writers around the country attempt to produce a 50,0000 word manuscript. The website has a great section for online community support as well as a word counter and plenty of inspirational tid bits to keep you going. The whole point is to get your novel down on paper without thinking too much (something which can paralyze the best of us).

This will be my third year of participating in NaNoWriMo, and I am psyched. I don't like to prepare overmuch for the month as that tends to engage my internal editor and pocket perfectionist. I use the month as a time to play with high speed writing and it's always a wild ride. I have my idea, my end scene, a few character sketches, some research and a few scene seeds. My particular style of writing is very much informed by the advice I read from Hemmingway in a Paris Review interview - "Everyday, write until you know what is going to happen next, then stop. That way you will have no trouble picking up the story the next day."

Congrats on your third time around. November is pretty much the month that I look forward to each year because I can just concentrate on my writing; and let my inner muse go crazy trying to achieve the word count for NaNoWriMo. It can be difficult though, while my hubby understands that he will be somewhat neglected--other people in my life think I am crazy. That is a great quote by Hemmingway. Best of luck!

Wow, that sounds so cool! I never heard of it before but I've been working on my first novel and I'd love to participate in something like that. Could you please send me the link for the website? PM me with it and I'll be so thankful! Annie

it's: http://www.nanowrimo.org My first year, I totally flopped, I just wasn't motivated to write at the time, guess you could say I was feeling a bit lazy. I won last year though, and I'm hoping to win again this year as well. Only 2 more days!!! I can't wait!

I've never participated in NaNo WriMo even though I've thought about it several years in a row. I just never have the time to devout to writing the novel because I'm always in school and always bogged down with so much stuff. It just seems pointless to me because I know I would not get very far, especially not while in school.

You'll know when and if you are meant to do it. I know that my life gets turned upside down during November--the house is not cleaned, hubby retreats to the basement, and if my boss mentions the word " Overtime", I look like a deer in headlights. To succeed at such a task, you really have to want it--especially when the going gets tough!

woops! I should have searched before starting a new thread, yours is almost the same as mine! oh well. I am doing masive research into the Mayan and Aztec cultures, because I am writing a fantasy and I'm basing my world on the ancient Mayans. This well be my third year at NaNo. Last year I finished with 183,000 words!!!! OMG! I can't believe I acyualy wrote three times the minimum! It shocked me when I did the final word count.

I have to laugh because this is my third year too. Your concept this year sounds really cool! Congrats on last year--that is an incredible accomplishment! This year, my novel is going to be based on a dream I had about four months ago (that might sound a little strange, but when I woke up, I immediately wrote what I could remember down...I was already looking ahead to NaNoWriMo!). Best of luck and maybe I will see you around the NaNoWriMo site!
