Would you ever spend $50 to cook one dinner?

One of my favorite things to do is watch the Food Network and other cooking shows. But, their recipes are way too expensive for me to actually cook. Most times the food is way too expensive.
One chef even bragged that he had made an entire dinner for less than $50. As if that were an actual accomplishment. Who spends that much money on one meal? Most times $50 would feed my family for an entire week. What do you think? Would you ever spend so much money on one meal?

I think it's fine if it's a really big special occasion. Also if it was for a whole lot of people. Otherwise I never want to spend that much. I belong to a cooking club and we just cook one portion of a meal for everyone. I never like to spend more than 10 bucks on that stuff. But if you think about it...10 bucks a person and say there's 5 people. One meal with all the different sides and such, that's $50 there.

I don't have $50 to spend on one meal. I think that is a bit extreme. I have watched and listened to the amounts. I have decided that it isn't worth watching some of them, because I couldn't afford it anyway.

If I'm spending $50 on a meal, someone else better be serving it to me!
I would say that on average the meals I cook cost somewhere around $5. Sometimes they cost more like $10 or 15, but not very often.
I would be so broke if I spent $50 on every meal!

Well, I might if it were Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, but otherwise, no, I don't think so. I've had meals in restaurants that cost that much, but I didn't have to cook or clean up, and I don't go out to restaurants much.
I wonder what those chefs eat at home? Do they seriously spend thousands of dollars a month on food for their family?

well first i would like to say that i just went grocery shopping. i spent $80 and that will last my husband, my daughter, and my self just about 2 weeks. Of course having to pick up little nesccities.. bread milk etc along the way..
BUT yes i have spent more then $50 on one meal. We enjoy dining out and some places that we consider least exspensive.. but then iget home and think hey i could have put that towards more then one meak..People do it every day ... spend more then $50 on a meal..

It depends on what the meal is for and how many it's feeding. If it's for a really special occasion and I want to use some more "upscale" ingredients then yes. Consider if you were having a dinner party with a bunch of friends and wanted to do a 4 course meal, then decided for the 4 courses to do a starter, a soup and entree and a dessert. You need to buy the ingredients for each course (including sides to go with the entree). Depending on how many people are there and what you serve, you could easily spend $100.
The average price for a beef rib roast is about $30. Add baked potatoes, a vegetable and a veggies for a tossed salad to the cart and you've probably spent more than $50 for 1 meal. There might be leftovers, but the initial meal is over $50.

It depends on where you live, I live in Hawaii and spend 100. a week on food, the cost of living in Hawaii is very high, and the wages are very low- 30,000. But if I were to cook for my father I would spend 50.00 on him because it's a special occassion, it remindes me about the story of Jacob and Esau, Jacob cook a meal and decieved his father to gain the inheritance, it was probably just stew. I think the people on TV make way too much and expect us to have all the resourses. I think it might be more of a challenge to cook for less, within your budget.

Fifty dollars for one meal, for a family of four, which ours is, wouldn't be all that bad. I'm sure we spend that much or more for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc. So, for a special occasion meal, yes, I would have to say that we would and do spend that much. For just an everyday meal, I wouldn't be able to afford that, though. That would triple our grocery bill pretty much.

Yes! We have too. Not often though, but things like Thanksgiving dinner or a special Christmas dinner will easily cost us that. The up side is we usually have enough food left to cover meals for a couple days.
We have a family of 4 and we could never eat on $50 a week. We typically spend about $180, but that includes household supplies too. My husband and son are big eaters.
