Hello there. Your friend is absolutely right. Dogs are active animals and they should not be kept at home 24-7. They should be brought outdoors for a breather.
Walking the dog is an enjoyable thing. I am sure you enjoy it =D
If you are really not free, it's ok to skip it once in a while.

It's absolutly NOT a waste of time & if you think it is then perhaps you might not should own a dog if you can not, or don't want to spend the proper time with him.
Dogs ned to get out & play & run frre & spend time with other dogs & meet other people so they stay healthy, happy & well socialized.
Think about it: If a child stays in all of the time, never gets to run & play outside & never gets to make friends they will gain weight, get depressed, find other ways of spending their time which could result in harmful, destructive things & they could even get sick and/or die.
YES DOGS NEED TO PLAY, RUN, AND MAKE FRIENDS!!

Owning a dog is a big responsibility. There are 3 basic needs that every dog needs to have fulfilled in order to be healthy, besides food, of course. They are: exercise, discipline and affection. Dogs need exercise in order to be healthy. In a pack environment, dogs travel constantly, keeping on the move and hunting. Sitting at home isn't healthy and can reduce the life span of our beloved pets. Exercising is important for both you and your dog and properly walking your dog establishes you as the pack leader and will, if done correctly, alleviate certain behavioral issues as well. I would suggest that you check into Cesar Millan's theories on dog behavior and health. He's pretty amazing and works wonders when it comes to dogs.

Hey Girl. I just recently got a dog in the past year. I adore him. Sometimes I look at him and swear hes a real boy! Taking your dog for a stroll is good for you both. My dog loves to stroll more than anything. Hes so cute when I ask him "You wanna go?" He runs to his doggy bin and picks out a tshirt and we are off. Its a routine. He loves it. Also its rewarding. If hes been good take him out. Walking him will also tire him out, calm him down. If you're really into your dog, like I am. You and him/her will make this your special time. It so cute when you know hes waiting for your special time to begin. I promise you will begin enjoying the walks as much as your dog. Plus it shows the dog how important he is. Make play dates with friends who also have dogs. Enjoy and Good Walking!
