I am so frustrated this morning. Against my better jusgement I let my hubby cave and go buy costumes for our kids this year. The prices are ridiculous! And the quality is just terrible. Case in point, my 4 year old wanted to be Jasmine from Disney. The costume was $30, and this morning when we were getting her ready for the Halloween parade at school I was getting her ready and her foot got stuck in the pants and the pants to it ripped right up the seam! So then I had to so it which was the equivalent of trying to stitch of Kleenex. I am so tired of paying out the nose for items that have no quality. Next uear we'll go back to homemade costumes. Any of you have this problem?

This must have been very upsetting to your daughter as well. I does seem that we are paying more and more for things and getting less quality all the time. The margarine that I have used for years just change their formula by whipping it so you pay the same amount for the carton but get less (and really yucky)actual butter. It seems everything is about the profit and they could care less about the quality. I will bet your daughter made a beautiful Jasmine.

I don't think I'd have the patience to even "try" to sew it back together. Instead I'd be marching my behind to the store to complain and return the darned thing. Good gosh, the price you paid for it, it should've lasted MUCH longer than that! That's crazy!

I face this a lot..!! I find this kind of quality related problem in branded clothes too..!! Mostly BRANDED clothes are considered good in quality, yes this branded name gets its cost very high, but at end of the day we belive that atleast we are getting the right quality we deserve..!!! But NO juts forget about the quality....it mostly betrayes you..!! My "Levis" jeans just got all faded up after just one wash..now I cannot dryclean a jeans common..!! I have this realy good designer top but when you see the stiching from inside, its just a single stich by some machine ...what an infant can also tear it apart easily..!! It really disheartens me a lot after seeing such quality ..!! So I always make it sure that I get the quality..I don't actually see any brands now.....Because its the QUALITY that matters me now. Brands go to hell..!!

wow, when i was a kid, we never had "purchased costumes",, we had to make our own., and it was fun going through our closets, and the parents old things. we could get some pretty creative costumes when we put our heads together. its sad that every holiday is about money.

My Aunt used to make me the most incredible costumes. She passe away last year at 80, but every year around this time I think of her and those great costumes.

Oh yes! Costumes are outrageous these days and they are not good quality at all! My daughter and I went shopping for a costume for her and she got a Dragon Geisha costume and the obi doesn't quite fit her even though the package says size 7 - 10. That belt should be quite loose on her, but instead it's tight and she has to use a safety pin to keep it in place. The dress itself looks very flimsy and I told her she has to be careful with it because it is very cheap material. This thing cost $35! I can't believe it really. I used to make her costumes when she was smaller and I have been caving in to her demands about getting costumes from Party City. Last year her costume wasn't too bad, she was a pirate and it was actually a pretty decently made one. I told her she should wear it this year but she said no. Sometimes that kid drives me nuts.

We went to Party City too. The selection stunk and they were way overpriced. My oldest got a costume in a 12-14 (which is her usual size) and it is way too small. They wouldn't take it back, and there were no other sizes up to exchange it for. The kicker was they had other costumes in bigger sizes but they would only exchange for the same item. Next year we are definately back to homemade costumes. Halloween has gotten ridiculous anyway, trick or treat here is from 5:30 to 7:30, talk about ruining dinner time.

Yes, I agree Party City is ridiculous with their prices. Well, anywhere these days for that matter. Even Walmarts costumes are ridiculous in price. I can't believe they wouldn't even exchange it for a larger one for your daughter. That makes me mad. I mean if they have left over costumes what's the harm of it? I think our trick or treating hours are about the same. Kids are not going to want to eat dinner after going trick or treating. I am making dinner early and my daughter is going to eat before she leaves the house. She can sass me all she wants, but that's how it is lol! Well, try to enjoy the holiday just the same, sorry you are having such a tough time of it this year!

There is a definate decline in the quality of products available for the children...from all of the toy recalls..which has become a everyday occurance...we also bought Halloween costumes..this year, my little one is the "blue" Power Ranger...his mask string broke the first time he put it on..URGHHHHHH Last night at the Boy Scout's Halloween party..I saw the cutest costume of a little boy with a pair of overall's turned into the "scarecrow" from the "Wizard of Oz"... I agree with you about making our own costumes for the kids...next year I will be doing the same thing...

There was a little boy in my daughters class that was a rock star. He had a bandana around his head, some grungy jeans and some temporary tattoos on his arm, he was adorable! It irritated me even more that we spent money on that ridiculous costume for my daughter.

i never buy a halloween costume before... but i am not willing to spend that much just for something that i will only wear once... i don't think that it is worth it... especially if the quality is so bad like what you say... i will bring it back to the store and ask for a refund...

They definitely are made cheaply. You usually can wear them once or maybe twice. They are too costly. We usually make our own. It just isn't worth it.

I agree. My three kids love costumes. They can be expensive & don't fit for long. My daughter has become creative t making her own. We also collect casts off & second hand clothing suitable for costumes & store it all in a big bag. Here is a cheap princess costume: What You'll Need Long-sleeved white shirt Assorted faux jewels Fabric glue Pink felt Tape measure Scissors 28 inches pink ribbon, 11/2 inches wide Safety pin 45 inches pink ribbon, 5/8 inch wide Adhesive-back hook-and-loop tape 11/2 yards light blue tulle Waxed paper 55 inches blue ribbon, 11/2 inches wide 70 inches blue ribbon, 5/8 inch wide Poster board Pencil Instructions Glue jewels onto white shirt in a necklace pattern. Cut a 27-inch square from pink felt. Glue large jewels along bottom edge of felt. Fold in ends of 11/2-inch-wide pink ribbon 1/2 inch; glue in place. Lay ribbon along top edge of felt, 1/4 inch down from top. Glue edges of ribbon to felt, leaving center of ribbon unglued. Let dry. Fasten a safety pin to end of 5/8-inch-wide pink ribbon. Thread it through 1-inch-wide channel created by ribbon glued to felt. Cut and glue a 3-inch strip of hook-and-loop tape to inside and outside edges of felt to close back. Pull 5/8-inch-wide ribbon to gather skirt around child's waist; tie ribbon into a bow. Place tulle folded in half (as it comes from the bolt) on waxed paper. Glue small jewels to tulle. Affix blue ribbon to tulle as you did with pink ribbon and felt in step 2. Follow step 3 again to thread 5/8-inch-wide blue ribbon. Place tulle skirt over felt skirt. Pull ribbon to gather tulle around child's waist, then tie a bow in front. Draw and cut out a crown pattern from poster board. Trace crown onto pink felt; cut out. Glue felt to poster board, and glue jewels to crown. Cut a 3-inch piece of hook-and-loop tape, and adhere it to inside and outside edges of crown for fasteners.

I don't think we've paid more an $12.99 for my daughters. Your right though, they do charge too much for really cheap quality. She'll get to keep hers to play dress up with too.

yup, holloween costumes are an industry just like any other and they of course want to make their money as well. I have NEVER bought a store bought halloween costume. My daughters 10 & 14 have always worn home made ones!

We usually do homemade ones too. But between my two jobs, hubby working 60 hours a week plus all the other things going on I just didn't have time this year. Next year I will make time.

I also hate to buy costumes and will do my best every year to make my 3 boys their costumes. Ive had some good times checking out the sheet aisle in wal-mart and made 3 really cool Star Wars costumes for my kids this year. The sheets are only $2.89 each for twin size. I Grabbed a couple different color combos and sewed away.

I refuse to pay that much for costumes that are only going to be worn once. I wait until the day after halloween and buy for next year once they are marked way down.

I went to Toys R Us yesterday to buy a baby gift and they had a ton of costumes marked down 80% off. It ticked me off that I couldn't return the ones we bought from a different store.

That's why I went as a nun this year to this costume party I was invited to. The only reason I went as a nun was not because I wanted to be one but because the costume was only 9.99 at Target. The other costumes there were 24.99 and up and I didn't want to spend that much on something I am only wearing once. I think making your own costumes is the way to go these days.

I have bought my kids costuems from Gymboree for the past 2 years. They are expensive but the quality is great. I too was tired of the cheap quality of costumes from Walmart or the Halloween Adventure store. NOW is the time to buy the kids costumes for next year- everything is 50 to 75% off, so at least you won't kihk yourself for spending too much if the thing rips!

Now a days, this kind of an experience is common to many consumers and there is nothing under the sky which can attend to the grivances.

My son's Knight costume was only $10, and I got my daughters cow costume at a yard sale this summer for $1. I will not pay for an expensive costume like that. It is crazy to spend a lot of money on something they wear for a few hours. I once spent $23 on a costume for my son, but he got to wear it 2 years in a row, so I kind of got my moneys worth out of it.
