Oh No!! Another Food Recall: Pizza

Just when you thought it was safe to buy food without possibly getting sick...think again. Now this time it's one of our favorite foods...PIZZA and due to e.coli contamination. Here's a quote from one of the websites: The recall affects approximately 414,000 cases of pizza products currently in stores and all similar pizza products in consumers’ freezers. It includes eight SKUs (stock keeping units or UPC codes) of Totino’s brand frozen pizza and three SKUs of Jeno’s brand frozen pizza with pepperoni topping, or incorporating pepperoni in combination with other toppings. The specific products in the recall include:Brand Product SKU number Totino's Party Supreme 42800-10700 Totino's Three Meat 42800-10800 Totino's Pepperoni 42800-11400 Totino's Pepperoni 42800-92114 Totino's Classic Pepperoni 42800-11402 Totino's Pepperoni Trio 42800-72157 Totino's Party Combo 42800-11600 Totino's Combo 42800-92116 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Supreme 35300-00561 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Pepperoni 35300-00572 Jeno's Crisp 'n Tasty Combo 35300-00576 The frozen pizza products were produced in the company’s Wellston, Ohio, plant and distributed to retail establishments nationwide. The potential problem was uncovered by state and federal authorities investigating 21 occurrences of E. coli-related illnesses in 10 states. Approximately half of the individuals who became ill were hospitalized as a result. The earliest case reported to state authorities occurred on July 20, and the latest case reported occurred on Oct. 10. Nine of the 21 people reported having eaten Totino’s or Jeno’s pizza with pepperoni topping at some point prior to becoming ill. Since July 1 of this year, Totino’s and Jeno’s have distributed more than 120 million pizzas nationwide. Totino’s and Jeno’s, working in cooperation with federal and state food safety authorities, launched an investigation immediately upon learning of the potential problem. The whole article is here http://www.generalmills.com/corporate/media_center/news_release_detail.aspx?itemID=29007&catID=227 It seems to be affecting their frozen pizzas that have pepperoni. My question is...Are ANY of the frozen pizzas safe that have pepperoni in it? And yikes..I was just thinking about buying pizza when I went shopping yesterday and the Jeno's brand was on sale..Didn't get though.

Well, since I don't buy frozen pizza and I don't like pepperoni, I guess I'm dodging this bullet! I think the last pizza bought frozen was when the roomie's nephew was staying with us in 2005

Hi pye, Here in Canada we don't have those brands of pizza so I'm safe! Phew! It has gotten really scary lately with all of the recalls on foods and other products. Thanks for the heads up, and for sharing this pizza information though! Have a good weekend hun. Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear.

Actually pye no we haven't had a lot of food recalls down here. Most of the time when we do have one it's from an American product so it gets recalled there first.

Do you have a lot of recalled food in Canada ..beginning to think this is a US "thing"--so like what happened to our wonderful gov't agency, the FDA, must be sleeping on the job, no?

I like those pizzas too and buy them when hubbys gone racing and I only have to figure out something for myself. I havent bought any since that last one. Im gld that I didnt get sick from it. I started to call their comment line, but I just threw the box and the pizza in the trash. I guess someone called them! Lol I didnt spend much money on it, thankfully, it was on sale that time too. It seems like every time we turn around there is another food recall. What is safe to eat? Something needs to be done so our food products are safe.

I wonder why the FDA isn't helping out more. And yes, it must be a pain for the supermarkets to keep track of foods that are recalled

I completely agree with you!!! It really is getting ridiculous how many food recalls there have been in just the last year or two! I worked in restaurants for awhile, and it's a pain to have to take out that food item completely. I can only imagine what the grocery stores go through each time there's a recall!

The FDA will probably make the same claim as the Consumer Product Safety Commission. "We are understaffed!"

Can't help wonder if the Jeno's pizza rolls will be the next thing recalled....yikes My mother's uncle (who was a bit of a hypochondriac) would insist on going to the kitchens at restaurants to see the conditions there. If he didn't like what he saw, he walked out. But gee, maybe he was on to something. Maybe if we Americans started "visiting" the processing plants of food items and didn't like what the conditions were, should refrain on buying those foods. Maybe it would get all these foods plants to clean up their acts

egads, and pepperoni is my favorite. Good thing I mostly go out for pizza and don't usually buy frozen pizza. But seriously we need to get this E.Coli thing under control because this many food recalls is just crazy. What is safe to eat?

Unfortunately pyewacket, I think that food recalls are the new norm. Gone are the days when you could trust brand names when it comes to food purchases-or anything else for that matter. It does not bode well for our society when we can no longer buy anything with confidence anymore.

That's the real kicker when these recalls come from large billion dollar companies...Look at the toy recall which was Matel, and these pizzas are from the General Foods company--you'd kind of expect this thing with a cheapie company

This is quite alarming. I had several of these in my freezer. I am sure they probably buy their pepperoni from someone that also sells packages of it on the shelf. It looks like we would see some of that being recalled also. I hope they get this under control soon. I cannot believe the amount of recalls lately. We have eaten alot of those pizzas in the past 2 months. We did have what we thought was a stomache virus over a month ago. Makes you wonder now.

It does seem to be the pepperoni types that are affected, so it does make you wonder if it's the pepperoni itself ...so that could mean a lot more recalls???

It seems nothing is safe anymore. Everyday its one recall after another. The brands in question are not the brands I purchase. I like Digorno. I guess we better make our own pizzas.

hi pyewacket. I buy only undersuface of the pizza, this cake, I'm not sure how to call it;). I dress this cake by myself. But it could occur some day that one of the ingredient I use to prepare my pizza is another food recall... I think that food might have been even more contaminated in the past. But lately people pay more attention to this subject. And more cases are reported. It's only my opinion, but food have been, is and will be contaminated from time to time. It is a minimal risk to buy food contaminated in really dangerous way. There are more sources of danger for our health and life, I mean more serious sources, more probable. I'm not scared of buying pizza even if I have heard of such case lately. take care and watch out for your pizza;). jazgottt

yep, I think it is the crust part. My English is poor sometimes. I know I'd post more if it would be my native language. But I'm glad that I speak English, even if sometimes I can't say what I am thinking about;). I also don't remeber many recalls in the past. Not only food recalls, also medicines and medical equipment recalls. Last scandal was about contaminated syringes. I think there were lower standards in the past. Lately people pays attention to sterility more and as result we have more recalls. cherrio. jazgottt

The crust part?? I used to make homemade pizza all the time, and just might go back to doing so now, but you're right, the ingredients we make even homemade could be contaminated. I never remember so many food recalls or none when I was though

Its time for all of us to buy land and grow and hunt for our own food! Organic! No pesticides to poison us. Thanks for letting us know - I'm going to pass it on to my husband who loves frozen pizza.

Or just have a greenhouse or backyard garden. If you're not a vegetarian you might want to watch out for ground beef. I told my mom about the pizza after you told us and she said ground beef has been recalled too - they feel its the machinary that isn't being cleaned properly.

"Greaaaaaat....." -_- I'm so glad I don't buy those. But still, my first remark stands. Uh...FDA? Are you there!? *knock knock* Hello!? Guess no one's home. Typical government. And what about the company!? How did they let this happen!?! Is it now "cool" to sell your customers contaminated food and poor quality goods!? Oh wait. Yea, I guess it is, it's been happening for years. Sigh...
