Being Thankful for Unanswered Prayers...

Most of us pray at one time or another. Sometimes for things we desperatly want. For whatever reason, sometimes these prayers aren't answered.
At a time of the year when we are showing thanks for so many of our blessings, I also like to be thankful for the prayers that weren't answered.
As a teenager and young woman, I remember praying for children...I thought my life could never be complete without them. I remember guys I broke up with or that broke up with me and praying we'd work it out. I remember praying for things to go back so I could re-do a bad decision I made. Although God didn't answer these prayers and it hurt me at the time that He didn't, looking back I am so thankful that some of them weren't answered. There is a song with the line "Some of God's greatest gifts, are unanswered prayers".
So what unanswered prayers are you most thankful for? Looking back, are you glad He didn't answer them?

I prayed that I would get back together with a boyfriend after I moved to the States. My prayers went unanswered and then I found out the man was a wife beater. Lucky for me that my prayers weren't answered as I probably would have been beat by the man if I had married him.

My mother always said God has four answers to prayer: Yes, no, wait and Are you crazy?"
Sounds like you got "no" answers to those prayers. I have had a lot of "no's" and "wait" prayers. I have more trouble with the "wait" than the others. Most of the no's I look back on, like you, and see the wisdom of them. I am coming to understand there is one prayer that is always answered "yes"! "Your will be done."

I've prayed for many things that went unanswered, ranging from prayers for the return of a lost pet when I was 6 to prayers for returning my mom, dad, and brother to health so they could live to a happy old age and watch my kids grow up. I guess God has his reasons for not answering every prayer, after all no one can live forever on this earth, and I believe we all have lessons to learn. I also had a boyfriend that I prayed to God to get him back after we broke up, but I am very grateful now, because my life is so much better than it would have been with him.

He always answers prayers...sometimes he just says NO! If you look back you will see now..from a distance that there was something good in everything that happened. And like you say.....sometimes you can see how good it actually turned out. I really can't think of something that I thought was important that He didn't answer the way I wanted that is a disappointment...as it says in the Bible...thy will be done. I guess that's basically what I believe.....

I rarely asked for anything because I kinda felt it was rude of me to ask for help. Funny thing is I still don't ask people for help and anyone around me would tell you I don't ask for anything, even if I really really needed it.
But I have kinda wished things were different at times and like you go back to change things or have a do over. I am glad now that it didn't happen and that I could be where I am today if I got those wishes instead.

hi twoey! you are so right. indeed God knows what is best for us. we pray for things that seem nice at the moment, only to realize that it isn't so nice at all when the future reveals it to us.
i have been praying for my former boyfriend and i to get married, but God seemed to withhold it from us. eventually though, after going steady for several years, we felt the impression that it was already time to get married. and boy, we were indeed so blessed during the preparating and during the weddding ceremony itself. and other people are so happy for us. they said they were glad we waited.:-)
now we aree very happy in our marriage and we are happy we waited. right now, we are waiting for God to bless us with a child. we are waiting and hoping and praying. :-) for HIs perfect timing...

Lakota, you may think god never answered your prayers buti think that really he did.he done what was best for you.You may not see it now but everything happens for a reason and it may take years for us to find that reason but eventually you will discover the reason and be so very greatful. Don't give up praying just be aware that you will only have answerd what is the best for you

Like you when I was younger praying about guys, and things.
I guess the ones I can remember that I am most glad about (aside from the guys) is I use to want to change schools so badly when I was a young teenager. I thought I hated my school. It actually did happen but when I was a senior and I didn't want to then. Ironic. But my point was I'm glad it didn't happen then or I wouldn't have started dating my husband (more than likely anyway).
One of the other things : my mom and dad had made friends with the owners of the fair that came to town every year. And my mom would work for them the last couple of years my parents were married. She even went on the road with them while they were in Kentucky the last year. I prayed so badly that we would go on the road with them permenetly - all of us not just my mom. I thought it would be exciting and adventurous and take away my problems. I am so glad this never happened for so many reasons...the big one though is meeting my hubby.
I do agree with that song line totally. It's just sometimes we can't see the bigger picture until we stand far enough away from it.

I don't believe in answered prayers. I believe He answered them. The answer was no.And it sounds like it was a good thing He said no.

I prayed my heart and soul into praying for my husband to come back to me when he left me Thanksgiving of last year. So far, that prayer hasn't been answered. Can't say I'm thankful for that yet. But who knows what the future holds besides God?

You are so right and this is a great discussion. I have also had unanswered prays that turned out to be blessings. I always say "be careful what you ask for because you might get it". There have been times I wished I could turn back time and change some decisions I have made but I think where I might have or could have ended up it I had decided to go another way and I just decided that God was the one who chose my path so I will just continue going where he takes me.

I really don't believe that there are unanswered prayers. I believe that some of those prayers we think are unanswered the answere is no, that what we are asking for is not what is good for us or God has something better in mind for us. Sometime those unanswered prayers will be answered sometime in the future. Sometimes it will take years for a prayer to be answered so weare to continue to ask for certian things.

you know t68 I believe God answers all of our prayers but sometimes it's just not the one we wanted.Take a minute to reflect & see how he did answer those prayers & how it was to benefit what we were placed here for-to please Him.

This all reminds me of the Garth Brooks song you mentioned, "Unanswered Prayers." How sometimes you think you know what you want, and the reason you end up not getting it is because God really does know best after all. It sure does take a lot of patience and emotional stability but in the end you end up looking back and realizing that you really do have what's best after all...
Just the other night
At a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into
My old highschool flame
And as I introduced them
The past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of
The way things used to be
She was the one
That I wanted for all times
And each night I spent praying
That god would make her mine
Tnd if he'd only granted me
This wish I'd wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again
Sometimes I thank God
For unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin'
To the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer
Doesn't mean he don't care!
'cause some of god's greatest gifts are
Unanswered prayers...!
She wasn't quite the angel
That I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me,
And her eyes too, it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the lord knows
What he's doing after all
And as she walked away
I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life
Sometimes I thank God
For unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin'
To the man upstairs
That just because he may not answer
Doesn't mean he don't care!
'Cause some of God's greatest gifts are
Unanswered...
Some of God's greatest gifts are
All-too often unanswered
Some of God's greatest gifts are
Unanswered Prayers

I am very thankful for unanswered prayers. I prayed a very long time ago that my marriage would work out in my second marriage. I am very glad that it didn't, or I would not know the happiness I know now. There are several unanswered prayers that I am thankful for. I can't list them all now, but believe me, I have many.

There was a guy that I was dating. Unbeknownst to me, he was sleeping with about three women. I hadn't gone that far with him. We were engaged. I prayed that I would be a good wife to him and he a good husband to me. Until the day he got drunk and confessed that he slept with mult. women at one time.
Glad I didn't marry him, I would have been a good wife, but he would have never been a faithful husband. Take care

This is often very hard to do and I'm constantly struggling with this one. I'm been trying to get pregnant for a long time and have been praying about it but my prayers still haven't been answered. I know that all I have to do is trust in the Lord. I'm blessed that my family and friends are very supportive.
