How much do you feed a goldfish?

Does anyone know how much you should feed a goldfish? My son won a goldfish at his school carnival a few weeks ago. The food can says to feed them several times a day, but it does not say how much to feed them. I do not want to be over feeding it, but I don't want to starve it either. Anyone have any idea?

You shouldn't feed fish all that much, when I had my indoor tank I was told every couple of days, I think if you have weed and such in your tank you shouldn't feed them that regular, then when I put my fish in an outside tank with weed in it they kept dying and I was told to stop feeding them all together and stop cleaning out their pond and they lived a lot longer. I really don't think you should be feeding them a couple times a day unless the feed is made that way which I have never seen ... I hope someone else can help you...

Every few days? That is way different than the jar of food said.

I used to have fish and I would shake a bit of the can in it once a day and they lived for years. My sister had one that lived for 7 years and it was fed only once a day a pinch from the can.

I know food jars say feed several times a day; however, the company wants to make money. The problem is people don't give a small amount and the water quality gets bad. Sadly, this is one reason many people tell me its hard to keep their fish alive. Feed once a day and your son's fish will get plenty to eat. The poster above me mentions the size of the eye and I completely agree.

You should feed you goldfish only as much as they will eat in one minute or the size of the eye is about the size of the stomach. It does not hurt for the fish to go a few day without eating. Just remember that no one goes out and feed the wild fish every day, they sometimes go without eating for weeks or even months at a time. Since they are cold blooded they do not need the extra food (like mammals and birds) to keep warm, their body temp is about the same as the water that they are in. You should have a tank that is at least 320 gallons if you wish the fish to grow to it's full potential. In a ten gallon tank (or smaller) the goldfish will not grow right, it's organs will grow but it's outside will stay smaller than it should and therefor it will stunt the fish and lower their resistance to disease.

I feed my fish small amounts twice a day and skip feeding one day a week. They do just fine with that. I hope you've got a big enough tank for it btw. Goldfish get big and enjoy company of their own kind.

I have three gold fish, that have lived for more than two years. My husband puts a pinch of food in the bowl once a day. That seems to be plenty because after all of this time they are still living. Try giving the fish a pinch of food once a day, gold fish can easily be overfeed. Actually, my cat Jake eats more of the fish food than they do.

I can't tell you how many goldfish were flushed down the toilet when my boys had fish. They werealways overfeeding them. I would just put in a pinch once a day. If they eat too much they then will bloast in the tummy area as they are ocnstipated. My husband tried and succeeded a few times to save the life of the fish by gently massaging this are so it could have a bowel action! If this didn't work then the fish would soon belly up in the container. Overfeeding is the killer. Kids like to see them dive and eat the food. They don't have anything else to do dso they? Swim around night and day - don't ever get a good night's sleep

i'm trying to find the answer to that question myself, my roomate just got a 55 gallon tank and filled it with 26 gold fish, he ask me to look on the internet to see how much and how often to feed them since he got so many. so far i am out of luck on that one. so far he has just been putting two pinches of food in there with them, i know that can't be enough, so if anyone knows or finds out exactly how much food to feed them it would really help us out. thank you for your time you can email me at ansmith47@yahoo.com if something comes up.
