Sequels Better Than The Originals?

It was just a thought I had responding to another discussion. In movies, series, gaming, ever notice instances where the sequels are just better than the first one? I know its not always the case, I've seen epic media and their sequels never come close to what the original was (The Matrix series for example). But from this, I've seen plenty of games, movies, and other media where the sequel is just so much better than the first. (Samples: Megaman 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Street Fighter 2 and so forth). So what are your thoughts on this. Do you have an examples you'd like to share for discussion or sequels you'd recommend? And thanks in advance for dropping by. I have other things going on, but I wanted to put this one out there since it was instant. Happy posting!

in the movie world i would say maybe not better but as good are Aliens,terminator2 and gremlins2. maybe the die hard 2. back to the future 2 & 3. but for every decent sequel is a crap sequel. jaws2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 etc. grease2. exorcist2. escape from the planet of the apes. speed2.

If only Keanu had signed on for Speed 2. Maybe he could have saved it. Or maybe not.

Keanu and Sandra have awesome chemistry! I think he didn't like the script. Still, Jason Patric?

Ah... well, sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. Sometimes writers use up all their "creative ideas" in the original and end up making a worse sequel in an attempt to "milk the cash cow." Gundam SEED was better than Gundam SEED Destiny. Lord of the Rings I was better than Lord of the Rings II (1 giant battle.) Though I agree many times sequels are better than the originals too.

I agree with the SEED bit, by far. I'm actually having trouble thinking of others though that are different. Well, I did go through a nice long public meeting with the workday on top, so please forgive any brain-drain I may have! Thanks again Wisteria.

The orginal STAR TREK is not nearly as good as STAR TREK : The Next Generation. The orginal had fairly cheesey special effects and the acting was not always so good either.

the Gods must be crazy. I like the original version than the sequels. Even Pirates of... the original is still the best. Although, I agree with you in the above movies that the sequels were better.

Pardon me for taking the cheesy way, but it's the only one I could think of, and maybe someone has kids so they could use this information. You know Steve Martin did a remake of the movie Cheaper by the Dozen? Well the sequel, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is far better than the first. Now, don't pity me, it was in the dollar theater and I had little money. : )

I think Eugene Levy really helped make it funny by having a 'realistic' looking feud with Steve Martin's character.

ljegbers, did you see The Man with Eugene Levy and Samuel L. Jackson? The only thing that made that movie funny was Levy. I agree, he can make anything good.

Hmm... I liked Scream 2 better than the first one:P But it is an exeption that proves the rule. Sequels tends to be much worse than originals because they're made for money, out of popularity. I don't think anyone should mention Harry Poter or LotR as example because those movies where made knowing that there would be other parts. Games are different pair of boots as the technical developement plays very big part in the process o making so they aren't on the same level;)

Quiet on the games yew! =P I've seen plenty of games fail horribly with sequels. Let us not revisit the horrors of the SaGa series! Hmmmm....!!?

Sometimes the sequels are better then the first ones, but sometimes they aren't. I guess it all depends on the story line. A lot of times if you haven't seen the first one then the second one won't make any sense. The first Butterfly Effect was WAY better then the second one, and so was the first Cruel Intentions. My favourite movie of all time is The Crow with Brandon Lee, none of the other Crow ones are any good! PurpleTeddyBear.

I at least remember The Crow. The sequels were very boring. The TV series, I couldn't believe. I wanted to throw something. -_-

Hello, I watch sequels...I thought that Saw 1 was the best. But i thought that in the Final Destination movies they kept getting better as they 3rd one came. But as far as the Exorcist...no the first one will always be the best and scared the crap out of me,same thing with Texas Chainsaw Mass..yikes...Have a great weekend,Toni xoxox

I didn't see Final Destination 3. I didn't think there was that much quality difference between 1 and 2 though. I agree with Saw. The original is the one that keeps me coming back. Later Toni! Good seeing you.
