Wrote an Article for Helium now all I seem to do is Rate Articles

I finally decided to break down and write an article for Helium. I had to Leap frog it, because although good, it was not perfect. However once I published it, I now have to rate article and I do not mind doing about twenty, but not one forty of them. I do not know how many I have been through, but it seems like a lot. Now do I have to rate every article and will that impact whether I get people rating my article or not? I want to write, not just rate articles. How much rating do I have to do?

Thanks for the post. I wrote an article and I got this cryptic email that if you don't rate articles, Helium doesn't work.I haven't rated any articles yet and I think I won't now. Thanks

I don't think there is any set number that you have to rate. Usually when I post a new article, I rate about 5 times and then bump out, which you can do at any time, of course. I do think that rating other people's articles on Helium will get attention for yours, but I think you need a balance of reading and writing. Good luck with your writing.

I really should do some more writing, but I could not do any yesterday. I was on myLot and even that I could not do as good as I wanted to because my husband was listening to Harry Potter and I do not have a laptop that I can take to another room. I have to have almost complete silence when I write.

You only have to rate as many articles as you like. It doesn't impact on your rating as the articles you are rating never have the authors name on them. Sometimes I rate heaps and other times none. it just depends on how i am feeling or how much time I have.

So there is no set number. I thought if you rated 0, then no article of yours published, etc.

When you publish an article on Helium, it shows up straight away and people can view it no matter if you rate articles or not. The exception is if you start a new topic. It then has to be approved by an administator. I still have one that they are checking as they aren't sure where to put it! lol.

I do some rating. Not a lot, but some. I may have received the cryptic email others have mentioned - I don't actually check my email all that diligently. I think I have rated about 5 articles for every article that I have written.
Sometimes I don't quite see why I should be rating some of the articles - some of the ones that I am asked to rate are about topics of which I know nothing.

I get the same feeling, I rate those on how well they write, and whether it is easy to make out.

I do not like rating if that determines if I get paid by Helium, it sounds more like a traffic exchange where I have to wait until my articles show up to be rated.

I hit "skip" on those. I don't know anything about horses. I've never been a CEO, etc. We get 10 skips and I've used them all before. But only one day did I get all topics I knew nothing about. Take care

The rating is not compulsory, you can always opt out if you do not want. The thing is that it improves your ranking, and also exposes to a lot of material. It tests your editing skills, and provokes you to think. I always try to rate as much as I can, and today I have already rated fifteen articles, but signed out when they asked me to rate children's stories.

I do not like doing too much ranking even though it might improve my editing skills, but I intend to write, not be an editor. Ten is enough.

I am looking for a good place that would look good on my clips, and somehow I doubt Helium is, there are so many articles and it kind of overwhelms me. I did a few ranking, but I went down rather than up.

I think the Helium rules state that we are expected to either write one article OR rate one article every 6 months in order to stay active. Unlike some who have commented here, I am quite happy with what Helium pays. I did notice that when I didn't rate ANY articles in a few months, my own ratings went down, and when I went back and rated just a few, they went up again, and that articles rated higher seem to earn better than ones not well received. But the article that is earning the most for me is rated 41 out of 176. That is not even in the top 25%, but it is something I wrote 10 years ago and it wasn't earning any pennies lying around in a desk drawer unread.
I don't think, though, that Helium is a good place for people who lack skill in writing or who write so well they expect huge payoffs. But it is a wonderful place for people who like a sense of community when they write, need to brush up on their skills, or just want to stay in touch with what is going on in the world.

I write one and then rate 5. Then I go do something else. Like write another article or leap frog one. They want people to rate quite a few articles, but if you keep rating, the computer will give you many many articles. I think if everyone did 5, then it would work out. The problem is that some people do none. There is nothing stopping people from not rating and there is nothing stopping the machine from coming up with hundreds of unrated articles. Something in between makes sense. Take care

So just because I rate about twenty, the computer gives me twenty more? That is not fair. I am doing the non-rater's job for them.

I just got one article for a penny, and I find it hard to look over stuff all the time. Five is good for me, but I do not feel I have to rate 100 or so. I would not get anything done, and unlike some people it is hard for me to write non-fiction.

To be honest, there was a time when I just wrote and did not rate, and believe it or not my articles still got rated independent of me rating or not. So don't put too much pressure on yourself to rate just because you want your articles to be rated, because rating itself might not have helped your article go up in the standings in any way; in fact, if more people rate your article down, your article is going to suffer a worse position. The point is, just be yourself and do what you think you are happy doing. By the way, rating has its advantage this novemeber, as helium is holding a rating contest and those with one or more rating stars are getting something if they achieve or maintain their rating stars; so your rating could be helpful in this contest! =D

I noticed one of my articles went down, but what happened was that I did not make one of a paragraphs clear, but I had already Leapfrogged it, so next time I will not leapfrog until I get someone to rate it.

Don't worry too much about the leapfrog you have done because you can leapfrog the same article again in 1 weeks time. You can make all the necessary changes you need then. About getting rated down, don't brood about it too much because life is not always about getting first and people have different subjective opinions, so don't be too harsh on yourself thinking that a low rating means a lousy-quality piece of work. I have learned to accept low ratings too, and what I do is I write more to counter my lower ratings. Good luck!

I just joined Helium and have submitted a couple of articles so far. Like you I seem to be rating an awful lot though! I just rate maybe five or six at a time and then go do something else. Five or six is enough for me to get through in one sitting.
It seems like quite a good site though although I'm sure I won't get rich from it!

I have one article, and one pending. I did not get much and I had the feeling, the more I rate, the more pay I get. They say you have to use your real name, but at 1 cent an article how much importance is attributed by publishers if you say that you write for Helium?

You don't have to rate at all, but you should do a few every time you write an article. I got the same email someone else mentioned - maybe it just went to those of us who aren't very active there! I hadn't even written anything for awhile, but decided I'd try and rate a few each day.

I got tired of Helium for that very reason. The rating thing went on forever. ALthough I didn't mind reading some of the posts, it was getting on my nerves to have an article become required reading.

The rating went on and on. I have not asked Helium if they have a certain needed to rate before the article needs improving, but it must be the case.

I started there in May of 2006 and wrote about 18 articles, which I then forgot about when they closed down the site. When I went back to look in August of this year, my articles had earned about $24. So I made it to $25 by September 1, and they paid me on the 6th or the 7th, I think.
They've since changed the rules so that you have to contribute an article or do some rating every 3 months (I think) in order to remain active. Otherwise you don't earn on your articles until you become active again.

I have not had time to write many articles. It is not something that well I can just suddenly write something. I have to have time to do it. That is what makes me upset, I have no idea how many to rate or whether it does any good.

I got one cent for one article and the other has not paid yet because it is about creative writing. So it depends on what you want, and they have oodles of stuff about finances, business, and credit stuff. I am a fiction writer and I am interested in stuff like getting an agent, the right words to use, how to write a sypnosis, not about how to balance my budget. Besides being a Canadian, they only pay for page views and I am not that popular.

That makes yours easy to find. What is it about? I do not know whether rating helps, but it certainly would help the one being rating and mine is under suspensewriter. There is a link to it on my web page on my profile. You probably had way more views than I did. I usually tell people to go to my profile and see for themselves.
I do not know if there is any guarantee, but by the way Helium insinuated, it might.

Hi I am glad you join helium, even if the earning is pretty small there, but I am glad you are member there too. tell you the truth I have never rated so many articles at once like you did and I don't think there is strictly said how many you have to rate at one time. i guess it really depends on you. But anyway I read somewhere more you rate there more you earn, also I don't knwo if it is true.

I also heard that if you rate too many, it is a good chance of your rating going down as they are more people checking you out.

That is nice to know, however I do not know what your opinion is like. I do not take everyone's word for it. Since this is about Helium, are you a very good writer and do you get a rating of 100%? Also do you get upset when you want to write for Helium but feel you have to rate and not just a few but a lot?

As far as I know, the rating system is optional. You do need to participate some, but I don't think there is an end point when you are on the rating page. There is no minimum, just once you write an article you get taken to the rating page. You can stop at any time.

I am a member of Helium too. I face the problems with you too. When I finish an article, they want me to rate articles. I always try 5 or 6 articles. I don't know whether the number of rating would infuence my income or not. But I am sick of rating the articles I don't like and I think it is wasting time.

I only got one cent from Helium. I guess you have to live in the States to make money there. Here in Canada, we are not allowed as much opportunities as they are, but well my husband has not felt the desperation that I do to move. The trouble is I do not want to write fluff which is a popular way of getting paid.
