During a bad storm Sunday, a tanker split in two, and spilled "560,000 gallons of fuel into a strait leading to the Black Sea in one of the worst environmental disasters in the region in years, authorities said." That's a lot of oil! The article says it might take years to clean this up! That is going to cause a lot of ecological damage, isn't it? Years? how can they hope to clean it all up? Years? Won't it just ebb and flow with the currents and spread out and they won't be able to contain it or keep track of it? What a tragedy! http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/11/russia.oilslick.ap/index.html

More crude oil burbles up in the ocean floor naturally than comes from wrecked oil tankers. Yes, there are natural crude oil sources leaking oil into the ocean. This happens all the time 24/7/365! What happens to all this natural seepage? As the ocean is an extremely harsh environment, that oil is broken down and dissolved throughout the seas of the world. If left alone, so does the oil from wrecked tankers. Generally, the oil from tankers is only cleaned up when it is someplace inconvenient. Unfortunately, crude oil does end up where you don't want it. Otherwise, the ocean will take care of it. People forget that crude oil is a natural organic substance from the earth. It returns to the earth. Crude that has been made into certain chemicals is much more of a problem than raw crude.

Well, I didn't forget..I don't think I ever knew this! LOL. You just hear all of the stories about the birds dying from the oil on their feathers and fish dying and such. And we continue to hear about the Exxon-Valdez spill that happened 15 years ago and how much damage was caused. It is actually still unresolved. Exxon is suing Greenpeace! http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/exxon-valdez-disaster-15-year

That certainly is an interesting link to the Greenpeace site. Quite a story. I for one hope the Exxon suit against Greenpeace is successful. Greenpeace has no right to trespass into Exxon headquaters. Exxon has been heavily fined for disobeying the law. Greenpeace should pay the price when they break the law too. I was mightily dissappointed as to the general nature of Greenpeace claims that this famous oil spill still has long term ecological damage in existence. Specifics were not mentioned. I firmly believe neither Greenpeace or Exxon is to be believed without the facts being checked.

560,000 gallons, how much gas does that make? I wonder how much our gas prices are going to go up. If this was in gallons of gasoline the cost lost would be $1,775,200.00 Guess who would be paying for that!

this will cause a huge amount of ecological damage and may take years to clean up not to mention the wildlife that will be affected by this disaster
