How many Cars do you have in your House?

Unlike most of my friend's families, in my family we have only had one car traditionally. It wasn't really necessary to have one. Most people think that two cars are really essential and they're often fooling themselves, creating themselves fake new necessities.
But we are going to buy a new car, in fact we've already booked it, and this time we're keeping the old one, which is the old one i will use mainly. Now i am working too so i need a car to go to the different offices i go to.
How many cars do you have? do you really need the number of cars that you have?

WE have two, but one is an old van that we take when we go camping.
Sure it would be nice to drive to work instead of using public transportation, specially in Winter and taking in account the fare prices. They just went up in here again $3.25 for one way ticket. I spend $over $100 for transportation each month - just two trips per day - while my husband spends about $80 in gas and he works much farther than I do!
I used to think that a second car wasn't that important but I am quickly changing my mind:)

Well i think that a second car is necessary when it IS necessary. Maybe in your case it is, but trust me when i tell you that in most cases it is not reall. Thank you for replying!

My hubby and I are self-employed and frequently travel together so we really only need one car. However, in the past when we were handling contracts that sent us in different directions we had two vehicles.
Right now we are back to one car and it is fine. In the event that we need a second vehicle we will get one. At this point in life we are more concerned with living within our means and creating the best quality of life possible by not incurring any more debt. We prefer having time to enjoy life over working ourselves into the ground to support a lifestyle that doesn't always provide balance and enjoyment. Been there...done that. (laugh)
So we are a one car family now and enjoying how we are 'motoring' along the road of life right now. We're working on the keep it simple principle...and happy with it!

As you may have read from one of my discussions I have 2 vehicles in my household, plus one I didn't mention on there...my husband's motorcycle. So in all we have 3. We have my husband's work truck which is a single cab. As you can imagine it was impossible for my family (my husband, 2 kids, and myself) to go anywhere together in this vehicle, not to mention I'd have to wait until my husband got home from work or had the day off to be able to use it.
The car I got recently was I believe VERY necessary as there was no way for me to take my kids anywhere, except when my husband's truck was available and then it was one kid at a time. There is no public transportation near my home and to have to walk to the stores or anywhere else would be just about impossible as not only is it unsafe (2 lane roads with no sidewalks), but it would take several hours just to get to the destination, (if my kids were and I were to make it in one piece) as we live out in the country. :P
Now as far as my husband's motorcycle goes, it is definitely not needed, but my husband enjoys it. And since he works so hard he deserves to have a little something that gives him pleasure.

Well we have two except mine has been off road at my Grans house since I haven't been able to drive through my health! I did need the second car as my partner works shifts and he works 35 miles aways so I needed a car with the kids and shopping, my Gran! Now though life is very awkward as I am totally dependant on my other half and believe me life is not easy! If we have an appointment when he is supposed to be at work he has to use his holiday entitlement! xxx

We have only one too, but we would rather have two, just cannot afford them. Because this way I am depend on my fiancee, so if i want to go somewhere he have to be home and the car with him. I guess if we will live in europe I won't really care, because there are trains, subway, buses. It is not really hard to get from one place to another in europe, but here in usa, it can be complicated without car.

thank you for replying. And about the differences between USA and Europe, i agree, but that's because cities in the states are planned exclusively to move with a car, not to walk or ride a bike or catch a bus, which is really bad.

We have one car, 2 suv's and a motorcycle. We do need at least 2, since we both work and in opposite directions, and sometimes get off work at different times. The SUV's are both 4 wheel drive, which is needed in the winter here. As for the car, it's a mustang gt and mainly just fun to drive, he does ride the motorcycle to work when weather permits, as it is more ecomomical on gas. So do we really need the number of cars we have, probably not, but do we want them, yeah. We do take trips on the motorcycle too.

wow, that's a lot of cars. I know that they're cheaper to buy and maintain (also gas is way cheaper) in north america. Having 4 motor devices in europe is incredibly expensive, you really have to be able to afford it. thanks for replying!

Not sure about the cheaper to run and maintain now, lol. Our gas is up to 3.13 a gallon, how much is there?

Actually, we have 2 right now in our house, but we own a double cab Isuzu pick up but is in Cag de Oro City since my husband uses it for his business. Yup, the two cars are really a necessity. The new car is actually bought by my son, and my old reliable car is the one I'm using when going to work, alternating with my daughter, but more often we go together as we have the same place of work. My son works on-line at home, so everytime he has transactions to the banks, or elsewhere, he uses his car. However, when we go to church on Sundays, we use only my son's car so we can be together....

Hi,
At the moment we don't have any car in our house. We will buy car, someday. Maybe when i also can work, then we afford to buy a car. If we have car, we will buy only 1 car. It's enough and because i can not drive ^_^
Couple weeks ago, i do small Poll at Cafemom. About how many people have car? And people who have car 94% and the rest is don't.

Hi LightninStrike! We only have one car and I guess that is enough for me and my husband. My husband is the one who use it more often and it is alright because there is always an available public transportation which I can take anytime and anywhere I want to go which is not very often. However he does drive for me whenever I ask him but not as much I used to before. I want to save some of the gas money. haha.. Take care and have a nice day.

It's cool if you have enough with only one car. After all, a car is very expensive to maintain. Gas, repairing, insurance...it's a luxury piece really. thanks for replying and have a nice day you too.

Currently we only have two cars at our household. My mom's fiance owns one and I own one. My mom sold her car early this year because she takes the skytrain and transit to work. She borrows my car alot which is fair because I used to always borrow her car. My Dad's home they have 5 cars though. I think that is a bit much.

There are three cars here. One for me one for my husband who has a truck and then we have one sitting that doesn't get used unless one of the other cars is down for maintance. We each have to be at work at a different time so it would be hard to have just one vehicle.

I have only one for my son and I. When I was married we shared the same car but were looking into getting another one. Now that it's just my 2 1/2 year old son and I I've thought about trading in for a newer model.
I guess the number of cars can depend on the life style. For example if you live on a farm you might have a bashed up style for around the farm and then have a good car for driving everywhere else.

In a household like mine it is pertinent to have 3 cars.
Firstly because one person uses it to get to and from work, transporting equipment (he's an A/C & Refrigeration Tech)
My uncle works as a supervisor for an airline cargo department so he has shifts some crazy ones i might add. My other uncle uses his bus as a means of income so thats failry straight forward and my mom, she hasn't had a car since her accident a few years ago but somehow that doesn't stop her getting where she needs to go. Although she does rent from time to time but on a whole it's a matter of how determined you are that not having a car wont limit your travels. She has managed it somehow, probably with great determination.
