Can you read when someone else is talking? Can you read when the radio is playing? How about if someone is watching TV in the same room? I have to have quiet or I cannot concentrate. How about you?

Actually! Im sort of a mixture. I can read when someone else is talking. I can read with the radio on but not too loud, and if I know the song I totally cant because Ill end up singing along. So ill put on a station I dont normally listen to.. just to get the drift of soft music playing in the back. No I cannot read and have someone watching TV in the same room because it is distracting I will just want to watch it with them. But if it is a show im totally not interested in or a movie I can and hopefully it is not blasting my ear drums!!!! I prefer to read at night.. before I am going to bed! I like it then because I know my body is physically tired and I know that it is my time to rest. So I hop into bed and start reading. I usually read myself to sleep. If I for some reason, dont read before I go to sleep I tend to usually stay up longer! I like to do it as a routine unless of course I go sleep at someones house or something. but other then that I guess Id say Im a mixture, I like concentration but noise in moderation is acceptable in some sort of way. Hope that helps, happy earnings myfanwy65!

Thank you!! :D I also read before going to sleep each night. That is the time when my house is most quiet. I shut my door and keep the noise and distractions out. I love to read.

LOL I know what you mean. It makes it much easier for me to fall asleep and I'm in a better mood if I read at night.

EXACTLY! I totally agree with you. That is when my house is the quietest and when I have the most time to myself! I enjoy it and it seems to give me a better sleep. I definately don't wake up so cranky! lol

I have to have complete quietness, if not I can't concentrate. I have tried to read around noise and I have to read the same thing over and over and still don't know what I read. LOL

LOL Yes, I've done that, too. I do that when I'm really tired, as well.

I'm like you, I just can't concentrate and read if there is some distraction. Thankfully I live alone now, so I don't have to contend with a TV or radio/music being played at the same time. You want to hear something funny? I often go to the library, but often just to browse through the books and maybe pick something out. Often even though I have my own computer, I'll sign up to use one at the library so I can print things up to save on my ink on my own printer. So while I'm waiting my turn for a computer,I try to read. No can do. Believe it or not, the library is the worse place to try and read..It's just not that quiet! LOL

I haven't been to a library in a long time. I just like having my own books too much. There are people who sit and read at the book store where I work. LOL It freaks my mom out. She doesn't understand why the company would let people do that because it makes them lose money on books that don't sell because people just read them there.

If I'm really into the book I can read during almost anything. I like to read in the car during long car trips and my husband listens to music at the same time. It isn't a problem for me, I guess I'm lucky that way. Watching TV and reading is a bit trickier because I tend to get interested in what's on TV.

I used to be able to sing along with the radio and still understand and absorb what I was reading. Not anymore. LOL

Hello myfanwy65. Yes, I can read when someone is talking, as long as they are not talking to me. And yes, I can also read while the TV is turned on, provided I am not interested in the TV show that's playing. I can also read in quiet. I guess you could say that reading is like breathing to me, I can do it almost anywhere at anytime. PearlGrace

I guess I'm just too easily distracted. If something is making noise, I pay attention to it. If it is not something that is constant, like a fan, it is too much of a distraction for me to continue reading.

I have a hard time reading if someone is talking to me, and that includes reading posts on myLot. My husband has an awful habit of wanting to read to me from the internet news or from his e-mails when I am either reading or responding here on myLot. I can handle the tv in the background, or music, but I cannot deal with him talking to me. I do not have to have quiet, but I cannot have a person talking directly to me.

Oh I know what you mean. My boyfriend will start talking to me when I'm in the middle of reading on a website. It is so distracting. I just have to stop and listen to him and then finish reading it after he is done.

I have to have extreme quiet too or I can't concentrate. I use to get mad at my husband because I would go to relax and read in the bath tub while he watched TV but he always had the TV up so loud I couldn't relax and read!! I would be in there for like 5 minutes and come out and he would get mad at me for not enjoying the time..like I can read with the TV blaring...

Oh. I know exactly what you mean. Luckily, I can read if there is a steady noise like a fan. And, in our bathroom we have a fan. That will usually drown out the noise of the TV.

I can read if someone is talking, or the radio or TV is on. But when there is some form of distraction while I'm reading. Then I start reading with my lips moving. I don't know why, but that helps me concentrate.

Having 4 children, you learn how to filter out the distractions. Although, there's nothing quite like total silence and a good book. It becomes rather meditative. :)

I cant i need to read in a very quiet place because i dont want to be distracted by the noise specially if you are in the most lovely part of the story were you need silence to picture whats happening behind the book.

Hi, I can not read when they are speaking as take my concentration, and radio with a good music until I can study, but relaxing is a radio and a Tv connected to the same fear in the same place not of the right.

There is a saying and I cannot quote it verbatim or attribute it but it is something like, "The surest way to start a conversation is to read a book." That pretty much sums up how I feel about interruptions when I'm reading. I can almost guarantee that the people who insist on talking to you when you are sitting quietly trying to enjoy a book are non-readers. If they were readers they would know better.

It depends on what type of stuff i am reading. If I am reading something serious, i get distracted. But still I make an effort to concentrate more on what I am reading. But the most favourable condition for me is to read in a quite place.

I can read through anything as long is it is not something that I am interested in. My roommate likes to play the radio when I read. As Long as I do not like any of the songs, I can tune it out. One thing that I can not stand though, is when someone talks to me when I am reading. I can understand if it is something important. But, people will try to hold an entire conversation with me when I am reading. Don't they get it? If I am reading, I do not want to talk.

Same here my freind.... Its realy hard to read or study the situations like these. If someone is talking or listenig to music in the same room, it gets very difficult for me to concentrate on my work. I feel very irritated at that time. It had happend with me many times. I still remember, once I was studying for my Science exam. I was very depressed at that tme because it was hardly a day left for my exam and I didnt knew anything. I started studying very late. I was trying to mug up everything as fast as possible. And at the same time, my cousins came and started playing video game in my room. I felt so angry that I threw my book away in anger...... It happens to me, I cant concentrate on what I am reading when there are some distractions in my surroundings!
